Kovach is valedictorian of Anchorpoint Christian School’s
graduating class. He plans to attend Gavilan College to get an
associate’s degree and then transfer to a four-year university.
After that he hopes to attend a college of optometry to follow in
his father’s footsteps.
Anchorpoint valedictorian awarded twice

U.S. 101 repaving results in detours
The California Department of Transportation began work Tuesday to grind and repave U.S. 101 from Coyote Creek Bridge near Bernal Road to the Guadalupe River Bridge near State Route 87.
The project will resurface northbound and southbound lanes on U.S. 101 as well as on- and off-ramps to SR 67 with asphalt. In addition, crews will install or replace dikes, metal beam guard rails, crash cushions, loop detectors, and approach and departure slabs on Coyote Creek Bridge.
Work began on northbound U.S 101 east of Bernal Road Tuesday evening. Initial construction includes freeway shoulder repair and mainline paving on one or two lanes.
The work will take place 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday. Saturday and Sunday work will run from 8 p.m. to 10 a.m. Work is expected to be completed by late August.
There will be no full freeway closures, but there will be various lane and ramp closures. Changeable message signs and detour signs are in place to assist motorists traveling in the area. Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling through the area.
New directional sign wins gold
Visitors to Gilroy will have an easier time finding their way around the city thanks to award-winning signage created by local design firm Articulate Solutions. The new signs received the prestigious 2010 Gold Communicator Award for design, the highest honor bestowed by the International Academy of the Visual Arts.
With thousands of entries received from around the world, the Communicator Awards are the largest and most competitive awards program honoring creative excellence by communications professionals.
Gilroy’s new directional and informational signs will gradually be implemented in prominent locations to welcome visitors to the city and guide them around the historic downtown area.
Two arching gateways feature wrought-iron box with elder leaves and garlic bulbs, which frame the city’s distinctive new logo and slogan, “Gilroy: A Community with a Spice for Life.” Additional wayfinding signs and kiosks will direct visitors to shops, wineries, golf courses and attractions..
Gilroy’s new signs, logo and slogan were designed by Articulate Solutions.
“(The signs) give residents something they can be proud of and also provide a warm welcome to visitors,” Articulate Solutions creative director Katherine Filice said. “We’re thrilled to win the Gold Communicator Award and share this honor with all the wonderful people of Gilroy. We’re so proud to be part of this truly unique community.”
City leaders were also honored by the award.
“This national award is a tribute to our dedication and commitment to this very important community project,” said Jane Howard, executive director of the Gilroy Visitors Bureau.
