Gilroy – Bob Lynch Ford of Gilroy is partnering with the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce to recognize Gilroy residents who have spearheaded community-changing efforts.

Bob Lynch Ford recently named Arthur Barron and Mary Fambrini as Chamber of Commerce “Good Egg” award winners.

Barron is the founder and President of the Gilroy Eigleberry Neighborhood Association which holds property clean-ups. coordinates a neighborhood watch and encourages a general sense of pride in the community.

Fambrini has made it her personal mission to reduce the city’s stray cat population by capturing hundreds of strays, paying for needed medical costs including spaying or neutering them and finding them homes with families in the community.

The long-time local Ford store’s campaign “Spreading Niceness,” should run through the summer and possibly through the year-end holidays.

Kohl’s kicks off volunteer recognition program

Gilroy – Each year the Kohl’s Kids Who Care program rewards outstanding youths ages six through eighteen for their community service. This year, Kohl’s will recognize more than 1,000 young volunteers across the country. More than 100 of those will receive scholarships for their post-secondary education. Also, ten finalists will be awarded a $5,000 scholarship each and a $1,000 grant to a non-profit benefactor of the finalist’s choice.

To nominate a young volunteer for a Kohl’s Kids Who care scholarship, complete a nomination form at any Kohl’s store or at www.kohlscorporation.com. The nomination deadline is March 15, 2005. Nominees must be between the ages of 6 and 18 at the nomination deadline and will be judged in two age groups: 6 to 12 and 13 to 18.

Two winners will be selected at each store – one from each age range – to receive a $50 gift card. Those winners will go on to compete for one of the 138 regional scholarships worth $1,000 each. Regional winners will compete for one of the 10 national scholarships. National winners will be announced in July 2005.

“There are many amazing young volunteers across the country learning valuable skills as they help others, and we hope to see each one being nominated for recognition of their efforts and their causes,” Kohl’s Gardner said.

The Kohl’s Kids Who Care program is part of the company’s Kohl’s Cares For Kids community outreach program, which raises funds for children’s hospitals, features fundraising gift cards for local schools and non-profit youth groups and provides an associate program to encourage volunteerism.

Matt Huerta joins South County Housing

Gilroy – Matt Huerta has accepted the post of Project Manager for South County Housing Corporation.

Huerta will work on the company’s Salinas Road project in Pajaro, Monterey County. It’s a more than $21 million, 63-unit complex for low- and very-low income families who lived in dilapidated and unsafe rental units on the property.

“I am very excited to work with such a dynamic organization,” Huerta said.

A graduate of the University of California, Davis, Huerta previously was a Project Manager for Community Housing Opportunities Corporation in Davis, where he was responsible for senior and multi-family projects and manufactured housing rehabilitation and replacement.

Huerta, 26, will reside in Salinas where his wife teaches junior high school.

Special presentation by Tim Fortino

Gilroy – Tim Fortino, the Edward Jones investment representative in Gilroy, will host a free one-hour satellite broadcast titled, “A Sister’s Promise: The Story Behind the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation” at 3:30pm on Tuesday, March 8 at 8060 Santa Teresa Boulevard, Suite 140 in Gilroy.

The broadcast features Nancy Brinker, the founder of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. When Brinker’s sister Suzy died of breast cancer at the age of 36, Brinker kept her promise to help others battling the disease. Her tribute to her sister, the foundation, is recognized today as the country’s leading catalyst in the fight against breast cancer.

Participants will hear hoe Brinker’s personal tragedy has offered hope and inspiration to millions.

Wireless service expanded

Gilroy – MetroPCS is expanding its wireless service to Gilroy. MetroPCS offers the least expensive plan of any wireless provider in the Bay Area – $35 a month for unlimited local calling or $40 a month for unlimited nationwide calls. Aletha Prewett is new member of AAA

Gilroy – Alethea Prewett, Gilroy, California, is a new junior member of the American Angus Association, reports John Crouch, executive vice president of the national organization with headquarters in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Junior members of the Association are eligible to register cattle in the American Angus Association, participate in programs conducted by the National Junior Angus Association and take part in Association sponsored shows and other national and regional events.

The American Angus Association is the largest beef registry association in the world, with more than 34,000 active adult and junior members.

Jeep Heroes nominations

Gilroy – There are heroes among us in Gilroy ad the Jeep brand is launching an initiative to recognize them.

The “Jeep Heroes Nomination Program” rewards military, police, fire and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel who deliver exemplary, unique and heroic service to improve the quality of life in cities and towns across America.

The Jeep brand is currently seeking nominations online at www.jeep.com/nominate. Each month Jeep Heroes will be recognized on the Web site and entered for a chance to win one of four new Grand Cherokees.

Twelve will be chosen in total nationwide, three in each category: Military, Police, Fire and EMS. The four grand prize winners, one from each of the categories, will be selected on Nov. 10.

Jeep Hero nominators must be 18 years or older and licensed drivers. Nominees must be legal residents of the United States and the District of Columbia, 18 years or older, and be current employees or volunteers of the police, fire or emergency medical service department or active members of the U.S. Military.

Nominators will need an essay of 200 words or less on why a nominee deserves to be honored as Jeep Hero. Those who nominated one of the four Grand Prize Winners will receive $500 toward new Jeep brand merchandise.
