Cannery Construction

“I drive by the cannery quite often and I’m kind of puzzled after grounding all that concrete and clearing up the property it still remains in the center of property a portion of the building. I can’t imagine why they left that, but would appreciate an answer, thank you.”

Red Phone:

Good question dear caller. What’s left in the center is the core electrical system that powered the entire cannery said South County Housing Senior Project Manager Nancy Wright.

“That’s the source of all the high power energy. Before we demolished everything we connected the cleaning system to that,” Wright said. “There’s a fenced-in area that you might see way in the back. There was an underground gas tank there. It isn’t anymore, but the area wasn’t cleaned up fully so we are doing that right now, but because of that we decided to leave that one power supply place instead of getting another.”

There are still a couple more demolitions, which include two bridges. There are a total of three bridges but one will stay and be used in the future for emergency vehicular and pedestrian access said Wright. She said the bridge will be quite aesthetic including lights and eye-catching architecture.

Wright gave Red Phone a little update on what lies ahead for the historic spot. There will be three phases of development. Phase 1, Forest Park, will include 39 homes and nine detached single-family units that will be ready to sell in March. Construction for Phase 2, Alexander Place, on the east side, will start in the spring and be ready to sell in September. This group is going to be more affordable, low to median-income homes. The final third phase, the Cannery, will start development in the fall and by spring of 2009 will begin to be available.

So good caller there’s your answer and a little cannery update. The welcome center at 7488 Monterey St., will be open at the end of next month so you can stop on by and see floor plans, learn a little cannery history and have any future questions answered. neighborhood cleanup

“Unfortunately I’m not going to have the right words for this, but the city sent something around about where you could adopt a street and they would give you a bag and the tools and all.

So I did that and I went down to city hall with a map of the area that I would be responsible for. But then I went back because I thought I maybe had taken on too much. So I went back a second time and altered the area that I would be responsible for, and it was also to clean out the storm drains. I just never did hear from them, so it just seemed disappointing to me.”

Red Phone:

Well caller Red Phone contacted Lisa Jensema, Environmental Programs Coordinator for the city. She was distressed to hear that somehow your application for the neighborhood cleanup program was lost in translation. Jensema said you should have received self-addressed material in the mail. A portion of that you fill out tear off, put a stamp on and send back.

Jensema said to e-mail Leslie Wilcox, Environmental Programs Assistant, who is heading the program and hopefully then you can get busy beautifying your neighborhood. Her e-mail is le***********@ci.us. Hope that helps caller.
