Pete Joseph Valdez III appeared briefly in court this morning for the attempted murder of a Gilroy police officer more than a year ago, and the judge scheduled a trial setting conference for later this month.
Valdez will formally identify his counsel Jan. 26 at the Santa Clara County Superior Court in San Martin, and both sides expect to set a trial date for sometime in the spring at the earliest. Berndt Ingo Brauer served as Valdez’s private attorney throughout the preliminary hearings, but he said Monday his client’s may opt for another lawyer later this month.
“It’s more than a formality,” Brauer said of the upcoming counsel identification conference as he exited the courthouse.
It has been 14 months since police arrested Valdez, and last month Judge Hector Ramon held the defendant accountable for the attempted murder of a Gilroy police officer and three other felony counts. He was arraigned shortly afterward, and now both sides await the trial.
