Gilroy – More than 50 antique and collectible dealers will set up shop in downtown Gilroy Sunday, closing Monterey Street traffic between Fourth and Sixth streets and offering their wares to shoppers and families celebrating Father’s Day.

“Whether you are a new shopper or seasoned veteran, you will enjoy hunting through the vast array of rare and unique products,” said Jane Howard of the Gilroy Visitors Bureau. “I know I’m taking my husband.”

And if you’re interested in finding out if that old vase Aunt Sally left you has more than just sentimental value, a professional appraiser will be on site for one free quote from 11am to 2pm. Other attractions include the inflatable “jumphouse” for kids and a variety food booths. Organizers say there will be plenty of free parking at the event which has drawn 4,000 people in the past.

The event is the first since the May 19 opening of the revamped historic downtown area and ushers in a slew of summer events such as music concerts, farmers’ markets, movie nights and car shows to come. The city of Gilroy finished an overhaul that included new widened sidewalks, street signs and lights, more parking and simplified street layout that did away with bends drivers often found confusing.

“It’s an opportunity to show off the new streetscape for those who haven’t experienced it,” said the Downtown Gilroy Business Association’s Dave Peoples, “and (for them) to pick up some treasures.”
