qualify for the USSSA World Series.
FREMONT – Taking second place in a USSSA tournament last weekend in Fremont, the Gilroy Chaos 14-and-under softball team was able to qualify for the USSSA World Series.
The Chaos went 3-2 in the tournament, outscoring its opponents 26-9 in three victories but falling twice to the Delta Diamonds. Gilroy lost 7-6 in the finals to the Diamonds.
Mariza Rodriguez, Kristen Dennis and Holly Lam all hit home runs for Gilroy in the tournament, with Lam smacking a grand slam in a 10-8 win over the Panthers in a third-round game.
Lam was even more impressive on the mound than at the plate, as she recorded 13 strikeouts in a 4-0 win over Liberty in the first game, six in the third game and five in a 12-1 win over the Panthers in the fourth game.
Mackenzie Mitchell hit two triples and a double in the tournament to turn in five RBI for the Chaos, while Raeanna Covarrubias had three RBI on the weekend. Covarrubias also pitched, tossing seven strikeouts to just one walk in a 5-1 loss to Delta in the second round.
Jenae Estrada had a triple and three RBI in the tournament, and Arianna Vasquez, Carmen Urtecho and Crissy Simpson all recorded two RBI apiece.
The USSSA World Series will take place July 26 through August 1 in Manteca.
