The Gilroy City Council held a regular meeting Monday, Jan. 9 at

The next scheduled Gilroy City Council meeting will address whether the City Council meeting time should move from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on a permanent basis, according to City Clerk Shawna Freels. The matter was brought to the attention of the City Council during their regular scheduled meeting Feb. 4.

According to the minutes of the Feb. 4 meeting, the “Save Our Gilroy Foothills Group” requested that the time change question be tabled at the next scheduled meeting. The group’s focus is to “protect open space in Gilroy and help shape smart growth in our foothills,” according to their website.

The group collected more than 200 signatures on a petition to demonstrate the public’s desire for a change to the Council’s meeting time. Along with this, the group pointed out that Gilroy City Council has the earliest meeting time of any city in Santa Clara County. The group believes that to facilitate a more open, responsive and participatory local government, then the time should be moved to accommodate the citizens of Gilroy.

Mayor Don Gage and the rest of the Gilroy City Council members will discuss the issue at the Feb. 25, 2013 meeting, which starts at 6 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, located at 7351 Rosana St. Gilroy.
