The City of Gilroy has released a 25-page marketing plan in response to an online survey that netted almost 1,000 responses from residents and businesses last winter.
The “Discover Gilroy” survey, created by Articulate Solutions Inc., accumulated responses from residents on all things related to the Garlic Capital – the good and the bad.
The Dispatch obtained the “Discover Gilroy Campaign Proposed Marketing Initiatives” last Friday, nearly three months after the report was compiled.
Proposals include a “Shop Local” marketing campaign, the formation of a Downtown Business Improvement District, a downtown community plaza and the construction of a conference center or boutique hotel near Gilroy Gardens.
One proposal included in the report – renaming the Gilroy Visitors Bureau as the Welcome Center – has already happened.
The Gilroy City Council is scheduled to review the report at an upcoming meeting, Haglund said.

The plan was drafted by a city steering committee comprised of:
– Mayor Al Pinheiro
– City Councilwoman Cat Tucker
– City Councilman Bob Dillon
– City Administrator Tom Haglund
– Gilroy Welcome Center Executive Director Jane Howard
– Gilroy Chamber of Commerce President Susan Valenta
– Gilroy Economic Development Corporation President Tammy Brownlow
