Dear Editor,

Martin Cheek’s Aug. 25 column was right on! I am so angry about what is happening to downtown Gilroy that it’s difficult to put into words.

Have you seen the pace of construction on Monterey Street?

One worker digs a hole and another one fills it in. In the meantime, businesses are leaving or barely able to pay their rent in spite of rent reductions. We will have the mall up and running before the main street of Gilroy is even paved.

Didn’t anyone pay attention to what happened to downtown San Jose when Valley Fair opened on Steven’s Creek? It’s been more than 30 years and we’re just beginning to see some life on First Street again.

Cheryl McKenzie, Gilroy
