A liquor store clerk was pistol-whipped Wednesday night after putting up a fight with a masked man who was trying to rob him, police said.

At 7:23 p.m., a man wearing a blue bandanna over his face entered Budget Liquors near the intersection of Church Street and Welburn Avenue and told the clerk to give him the money in the cash register, police said. The clerk refused and the man struck the clerk in the back of the head with a pistol.

The man then grabbed the cash register and ran, police said. Police declined to specify how much cash was in the register.

According to witnesses, the robber was between 32 and 35 years old, 5-feet-11-inches and 190 pounds. He wore blue jeans, a blue hooded sweatshirt and white sneakers.

Anyone with information on the armed robbery can contact the Gilroy Police Department at 846-0350.
