GILROY – The Gilroy Clippers stumbled on the way to a possible second-half Men’s C League softball title Friday at Gavilan Sports Park, losing 17-16 to the AAA Courier Poor Boys.
A victory would have given the Clippers a 5-0 lead and locked up the pennant. Instead, after the Clippers scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning, the Poor Boys countered with four markers and sent the Clippers to a 4-1 record.
The Poor Boys are 3-1 with two weeks to play in the season. The winners stroked six consecutive singles to produce four run in the eighth inning. Matt Corona of the Poor Boys forced the extra frame when he scored a tying run in the seventh inning.
Corona finished with a 5-for-6 performance and scored four runs. Dave Signorotti went 5-for-5. Andrew Ornelas, Doug Cummings, Daniel Vasquez, Joe Ojeda and Rich Perez hit Clipper home runs.
Puzzle Systems, the first-half DD League winner, moved to 2-2 in C action with a 10-6 victory over the Red Dogz. Brian Sullivan went 3-for-3 and scored twice for the Puzzle, with Israel Del Real and Pete Del Real each good for three hits. George Salgado homered and doubled for the Red Dogz.
Matt Hernandez and Nate Suarez each went 4-for-4 to lead Kenko Pipelayers to a 16-1 win over Humboldt Brewing. Mike Wall singled home the Humboldt run.
Krazy Koyotes-Dutchman’s Pizza created a three-team tie for first place in the Men’s CC League with an 8-3 nod over Guy’s Heating and Air Conditioning Monday at Gavilan.
Don Hufnagel hit a three-run home run and Ken Hopf doubled and tripled as Krazy-Dutchman joined Guy’s and Dee’s Nuts at 3-2. Joe Laredo went 3-for-3 for Guy’s Heating.
Handmade Healthcare earned the second-half Men’s CCC League crown with an 11-3 victory over Los Gatos Capital Monday at Las Animas Park.
Handmade will play in the CCC best 2-of-3 Championship Series next month. Los Chilotes will represent the first half in the D League playoffs.
Dave Jackson singled and doubled, scoring twice for Handmade. Guy Bostock and Benji Doi hit two-run singles in a nine-run Healthcare fifth inning. Mike Mendoza and Steve Murnin each went 2-for-3 for Los Gatos Capital.
Matt Piedmont, Mario Bena and Brad Burrows ripped home runs in an 11-6 AJ’s Boys win over Las Animas Sweepers. Chris Adame scored three AJ’s runs. Emiliano Arde went 3-for-4 for the Sweepers.
