GHS girls basketball team shoots 18-of-66 from field in 57-47
road loss to Andrew Hill
SAN JOSE – The Lady Mustang hoopsters did not have a strong start to their promising season as they shot a miserable 18-of-66 from the field in last Tuesday’s 57-47 road loss to Andrew Hill.
“We took good shots. We just didn’t make any baskets,” second-year head coach Kari Williams said. “We took 25 more shots than them. We got rebounds and would put it back up, put it back up – but we couldn’t buy a basket.”
Gilroy (0-1) was without senior center Sarah Hoeft, who has not returned from vacation, and senior guard Sarah Miller struggled to find her touch from the outside.
Sophomore Marissa Nowakowski (5-of-7 from field) came up big in her first varsity game with a team-high 11 points, while junior Antionette Okere pulled down a team-high 16 rebounds to go along with her nine points.
“She did a great job. She earned a starting position on the team and played a great defensive game. She made her shots when she took them,” said Williams of Nowakowski. “I expect her to get 8-10 points per game, but I don’t expect her to be our leading scorer.”
Sophomore guard Kristen Campos (four assists) and junior forward Kendall Costa added eight points apiece in the losing effort. Junior center Michelle DiFiore tallied 10 rebounds before fouling out 20 seconds into the final quarter.
The Lady Mustangs had 22 team fouls – allowing Andrew Hill to pull away at the free throw line.
Gilroy will host the Lady Mustang Classic on Nov. 4-6 and open with Thursday night’s first-round matchup against North County at 8 p.m.
