DEAR EDITOR:
As a member of the “local right wing” group, I wish to enlighten that mouthpiece of the “liberal left wing” – Dennis Taylor.
When he called James Brescoll a “John Bircher”, he paid James a most worthy compliment. For Dennis’ information, the John Birch Society (JBS) is not a political organization, nor is James Brescoll a member of the society. The JBS is an educational society, not political. The society never endorses a candidate or political issue on a ballot.
The society is best expressed by its motto, “Less government, more individual responsibility, and with God’s help a better world.” Note that the JBS recognizes GOD, the GOD of Israel, creator of the heavens and earth.
It is also the society’s belief that the average individual, if properly informed, will make the correct decision on most issues. The problem is that, too often, proper information is not available. The role of the JBS is to get proper, truthful information to the individual via the magazine, “The New American.”
All John Birchers know that, contrary to Taylor’s implication, Sen. Joseph McCarthy was not the “most hated senator.” McCarthy was well liked by his senatorial colleagues. The senators recognized that McCarthy had stirred up a hornet’s nest when he discovered the infiltration of communist agents into the then current administration, even up to the White House (Harry Hopkins, FDR’s major advisor). Most other senators knew McCarthy was right, but they hunkered down and refused to get involved.
Because John Birchers are informed, columns like Dennis Taylor’s are annoying. How can an intellectual like Taylor be so ill informed and so arrogant?
