Rate Gilroy’s traffic circulation:Outstanding, Good, Fair or Poor
- Outstanding. Ever try to get around easily in your car in San Jose, San Francisco or Los Angeles? We can easily get around most times and most places in Gilroy and all of South County. There’s high traffic around school areas at arrival and departure times. There’s high traffic on weekends around Outlets. We can get around those small inconveniences. Additionally, we don’t pay a penny for parking anywhere in our community. It doesn’t get better than this.
- Good. Not much to complain about except off of exit for 10th Street. In the afternoon it is hard to get to Costco and other stores. Where I think we need help is parking! When you go to the outlets parking is limited. If your trying to enjoy downtown, parking is very limited. We need more parking structures to accommodate our growing community.
- I’ll say Good-plus. Only problem areas: Lower Welburn Avenue can get so backed up in morning and late afternoons/evenings; need a 4-way stop sign at Eigleberry and 6th and at Eigleberry and 3rd; 10th Street is a mess from Alexander Street to Gilroy Foods. Of course, it’s always bad around the schools in a.m. and afternoon, but that is expected. We’re not the small town we once were – used to go from the Santa Teresa to New Avenue in 5 to 6 minutes! But that’s OK, Gilroy just keeps getting better and better!
- Very good, if you can avoid the morning and afternoon school traffic driving in Gilroy is a breeze!
- Outstanding. The timing of the lights is very perceptive no matter what the time of day it is and I really appreciate that! Nice work, city traffic controllers!
- Good. As a person who travels around town all day every day, I think traffic does flow, could use improvement in some areas. I do miss getting across town in 5 minutes with few stops but I also enjoy the amenities we now have.
- Good. In most areas. It’s always busy near shopping areas on the weekends.
- Outstanding, I love that Gilroy is growing and it still only takes us 12 minutes to get across town! I appreciate all the city has done to help those “problem” areas i.e. 3rd and Wren, 10th and Princevalle (Gilroy High) and Santa Teresa (Christopher) but even those areas are only a problem at certain times of the day. This is a great city to live in!
- Good. In fact, it may be too good. Gilroy’s General Plan requires relatively high levels of service for a California city of its size, ostensibly “to promote a high quality of life”. This quality of life provision is a two-way street. High levels of service require more transportation improvements which cause undesirable consequences such as more pavement, more storm water runoff, more heat from the pavement, more traffic signals, more maintenance, more costs, and on and on! It also creates barriers to economic growth in the form of high costs for new and expanding businesses, such as traffic improvements and impact fees. By way of example, San Jose has no level of service requirement for the downtown. Sitting through one signal cycle in the morning, evening or weekend for the sake of economic growth will not degrade our quality of life.
- Good. Except for a couple of intersections at peak times the traffic is good.
