GILROY—If you like golf and you like soccer, the Gavilan College Golf Course has just the thing for you.
Gavilan College G.C. will launch its Inaugural FootGolf Kickoff Challenge at 1 p.m. June 1. What’s FootGolf, you ask? It’s exactly what it sounds like.
FootGolf is a game that uses golf’s basics—tee boxes, fairways, greens, bunkers and hazards. The 18-hole course is played with a soccer ball that is kicked from the tee area down the fairway into a 21 inch diameter cup in the fewest amount of kicks—or strokes—just like golf. The holes are a half to a third the distance of a regular golf hole and the soccer ball doesn’t travel as far in the air, but rolls just as far on the fairway. Gavilan’s course has holes ranging from 71-163 yards and is a par 70.
“Gavilan Golf Course and the South County is the perfect place to introduce FootGolf. We have a tremendous amount of soccer players in the area and I believe this is a new wrinkle to both the game of soccer and the game of golf,” Don DeLorenzo, PGA Professional said. “It is a true family sport that has no boundaries. If you are 5 to 85 and can kick a ball, come out and play.”
DeLorenzo is credited as being the driving force behind bringing the game to Gavilan.
