Dear Editor:
On April 3 a rebuttal letter was submitted by the Gilroy Unified School District Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Linda Piceno to a previous article by Cynthia Walker.
Ms. Walker stated that GUSD was top heavy with administrators. Ms. Piceno took issue with that statement and stated that “32.65 out of 543.113 certificated employees are administrators.” However, if you do the math, that comes out to 16.634 teachers for every administrator. Even in the K-3 class size reduction classes, which are in danger of increasing in size, there are 20 students to one teacher which is greater than the teacher to administrator ratio. This does not even account for our 4-12 grade classes where often there are 30 to 34 students (or more) in many classrooms.
One has to wonder why Gilroy thinks it is more important to have a lower teacher administrator ratio than student to teacher ratio? In these difficult times of budget woes, I hope our superintendent and Board of Education will keep these figures in mind (which were submitted as fact in the April 3 letter) as decisions are made for our own students and district.
Marion Vogt, Gilroy
