The sound of the shofar, a trumpet-like blast made by blowing on a ram’s horn, will ring through Congregation Emeth in Morgan Hill for the upcoming High Holy Day services.
Congregation Emeth, serving southern Santa Clara County, will be offering a variety of High Holy Days programs and services.
The High Holy Days consist of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year and Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. On the Jewish calendar, this month marks the beginning of the year 5784. Jews around the world will be celebrating the New Year on the evening of Friday, Sept. 15 and the following day.
Yom Kippur is observed by Jews as a day of fasting, prayer and reconciliation. Yom Kippur begins on the evening of Sunday, Sept. 24, and continues until sundown the following evening.
Guests and new members are encouraged to attend services at Emeth.
“Emeth is a very open and welcoming community and we strive to make everyone feel like they belong,” said Marilyn Freund, Emeth’s membership chair.
Rabbi Faith Joy Dantowitz has been the rabbi at Congregation Emeth for three years, relocating to California from her native New Jersey, where she had served as Associate Rabbi at Temple B’nai Abraham in Livingston, N.J. for the previous 10 years. She is passionate about social justice, pastoral care, teaching children and adults, leading services and finding joy.
Joining Dantowitz to lead the High Holy Day services will be Cantor Richard Schwartz along with accompanist Chip Colvin.
Schwartz has served Jewish communities and individuals as a spiritual leader, cantor and Jewish educator for more than 30 years.
Colvin recently took the position of resident music director at Backyard Kid’s Theater in Marin. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance with minors in Choral Conducting and Vocal Performance at a small liberal arts college in Houston, Texas. He then went on to earn his Master’s Degree from the University of Southern California in Keyboard Collaborative Arts.
