GILROY – Proud of your city? Then why not show your true colors – through art.

Friday is the opening day of a contest held by the city’s Youth Commission to design a “city flag” for Gilroy.

The commission took up the project at the suggestion of City Council-man Craig Gartman, who occasionally advises and suggests projects for the group, said Commissioner Lauren Bevilacqua.

“We thought it would be a good idea,” said Bevilacqua, a 15-year-old Archbishop Mitty sophomore. “Gilroy doesn’t have a flag, and maybe it will represent it better.

“We thought it would be something that could be around for a long time.”

After the contest ends in mid-April, the Youth Commission will select five finalists and present them to the City Council, which will make the call on a prototype design that will be sent to a professional company for creation.

The city plans to take delivery of the new flag in July, in time to stage an inaugural flag-raising ceremony at the city’s Garlic Festival.

The contest is open to all Gilroy residents. Flag designs should depict the city’s rich cultural heritage, use colors, be tasteful and creative and may use all or part of the current City of Gilroy’s symbols.

Design entries must be 36 inches by 60 inches in color and be accompanied by a project entry form, which can be obtained at Gilroy City Hall.

Entries are due at the Gilroy Community Services department by 5 p.m. on April 18. The winner receives no monetary compensation.
