GILROY—Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal hit-and-run incident in Gilroy as Salvador Briseno Gonzalez, a 57-year-old homeless man, the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office reported Wednesday.
The man died of multiple blunt force traumas to his body after he was struck by what police believe was a white SUV before 11 p.m. on Sept. 4 near the intersection of Church Street and Gurries Drive.
The driver was not located as of Wednesday and will likely face felony vehicular manslaughter charges, Gilroy Police Department Sgt. Royce Heath said. Witnesses reported seeing a small or mid-sized SUV strike the man before its driver fled northbound on Church Street.
Authorities found Briseno Gonzalez lying unconscious in the street at 11:03 p.m. suffering from massive trauma. He was airlifted to a San Jose hospital where he underwent emergency surgery, but died from his injuries Sept. 7, according to Heath.
Police are seeking any witnesses to the collision in hopes of locating the driver. Authorities are asking anyone with information to call the GPD at (408) 846-0350 and ask for Corporal John Ballard or Officer Rene Arbizu.
