GILROY – Cosa Nostra remained unbeaten in Men’s Winter E League softball play Tuesday, edging the Slammers 6-5 at Christmas Hill Park.
A defensive play locked up the fourth win for Cosa Nostra. The Slammers, trailing 6-4 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, loaded the bases against relief pitcher Mario Escudero. Jesse Marquez lashed a single to center, plating Ben Torres. A relay throw from outfielder Roy Escudero to shortstop Armando Hernandez to catcher Jose Serrano cut down Oscar Soriano, the potential tying runner, at the plate.
Mike Sandoval and Eddie Adame each singled and tripled for the winners. Mike Perry went 2-for-3 and drove in one Slammer run.
The Boss Hawgs remained one game off the Cosa Nostra pace with a 9-5 decision over VFW Bingo.
Anthony Bautista lined a two-run home run, two-run single and two other hits as the Hawgs improved to 3-1. Sam Juarez, Gabriel Rodriquez and Manny Juarez each netted two Hawg hits. Gabe Sandoval launched a two-run triple for VFW Bingo.
John Day singled and scored on an error in the bottom of the seventh inning as Covenant Builders trimmed Blackout Window Tinting 14-13.
Day finished with a triple and two singles, Bill Hunt three singles for the 2-2 Builders. Chris Velador went 4-for-4 and scored three runs for Blackout Window Tinting.
The VFW Vets are 4-0 with a two-game lead in the Men’s C League after a 20-5 victory over Guy’s Heating and Air Conditioning Tuesday at Las Animas Park.
Daniel Montenegro drove in five Vets runs with a home run, double and single. Chris Adame went 3-for-3 and scored three Vet runs. Jerry Nelson and Mike Gonzalez added three hits for the winners. Marco Delgado went 2-for-3 for Guy’s Heating.
The Playaz outlasted Dee’s Nuts 9-4 to leave both clubs at 2-2. Benny Sanchez provided three hits and Paul Garcia scored three runs for the Playaz. Ricky Gonzalez singled and doubled, driving in one Dee’s run.
Good Fellas topped Las Animas Sweepers 13-11 to leave each team at 2-2 midway through the eight-game winter slate. Charlie Muro hit two singles and a double for the Good Fellas. Kevin Orosco, Donnie Gooding and Joe Benavides stroked three hits each for the Sweepers.
