GILROY – The Gilroy City Council will consider the following items of interest at its meeting Monday:

• A study session on budget dynamics and how to prioritize city services in preparation for potential cuts resulting from the slow economy, increasing employee costs and impacts from the state’s budget deficit.

City Manager Jay Baksa has asked each city department to prioritize its most essential services and identify where it could potentially cut 10 percent from its budget. Each member of the City Council has also drawn up an individual ranking of his budget priorities – from top to bottom – among those departments and services.

• A recommendation to award a bid for $1,659,185 to Golden Bay Construction for the second phase of the Monterey Streetscape Improvement Project and other operational improvements along Monterey Street downtown.

• Repeal of a resolution establishing an underground utility district along Santa Teresa Boulevard north of Longmeadow Drive. The resolution would have ordered underground installation of electric and communication wires, with $1,500 in Pacific Gas and Electric funding available for each service connection and property owners paying the remainder.

However, some properties targeted for the undergrounding are outside of city limits. The city does not have jurisdiction to require undergrounding outside or qualify for PG&E funding there, according to city staff.

• An informal oral report reviewing the first weekend used-car sales event held by The Car Store at the South Valley Plaza shopping center. The series of four temporary sales Council approved by a split vote have drawn criticism from existing Gilroy auto dealers.

• A resolution supporting a group called the Coalition Against Bigger Trucks, which is campaigning to maintain current truck size and weight limits.

• The purchase of a Ford F550 truck with an Altec aerial manlift boom unit for $73,652.

The budget workshop begins at 6 p.m. with the regular meeting following at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at Gilroy City Hall, 7351 Rosanna St. For information call 846-0400.
