Caltrain might cancel service to Gilroy due to budget cuts and decreased ridership, according to an alert sent to residents and city officials from Councilwoman Cat Tucker, who also sits on the Caltrain Citizen Advisory Board.

“Gilroy ridership is down by 27% since 2006,” Tucker wrote in an e-mail Friday morning. “It was clearly stated in the preliminary budget report for them to stop service to Gilroy along with other cost reduction methods. Their main concern is that the partner agencies are not

contributing the same amount of money as they have in the past.”

Tucker called on her colleagues to “pressure” Caltrain to not cancel the service, which was extended to Gilroy in 1992 thanks to a concerted effort by South County residents.

“As you can imagine once the trains stop coming they won’t be easily started again,” Tucker wrote.
