Gilroy – The Department of Parks and Recreation released $3.6 million in federal funding for trail projects statewide and Santa Clara County will receive a chunk of the green.

Nearly $500,000 was allotted for Coyote Lake-Harvey Bear Ranch County Park to construct a multi-use trail in its Phase II of trail development. The 4,595-acre park is settled in the Diablo Range east of the city and was selected to receive $480,000 – the most given to any of the 16 parks.

“It’s a competitive process and everyone submits their request for funding,” said Parks and Recreations spokesperson Roy Stearns.

The Coyote Lake-Harvey Bear Ranch project will develop 14.35 miles of multi-use trails to complete the network of trails in the park.

The funds come from the Federal Highway Trust Fund and represent a portion of the motor fuel excise tax on non-highway recreational fuel use collected from vehicles such as snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, off-highway motorcycles and light trucks.

“This funding opens the door on beautiful places across the state,” said State Parks Director Ruth Coleman.
