Gilroy – A crowd of roughly 150 people got into a fight about 1:30am Sunday morning in the parking lot of Krazy Koyote Bar and Grill, 8337 Church St. Bar staff reported the fight to police, who arrived to find smaller fights breaking out among the crowd. Patrons threw three beer bottles at the officers, all of which broke at their feet. Police dispersed the crowd using pepper-ball guns. No arrests were made, and no injuries were reported.
High School Burglar Ransacks Five Classrooms
Gilroy – An unknown person forced entry into five Gilroy High School classrooms at 1:45am Friday. A laptop computer, a DVD player and $200 cash were taken from the rooms.
Domestic Violence Resource Workshop
Gilroy – To tackle the issue of domestic violence, a coalition of judges, social workers, service providers, law enforcement and community activists are holding Gilroy’s first Domestic Violence Information and Resources Workshop, from 6:30 to 8pm Thursday at South Valley Middle School’s gym, 385 IOOF Ave. The event was planned by Judge Erica Jew, a Superior Court Judge who sees domestic violence cases, and who felt that victims didn’t know enough about community resources. More than 100 people are expected to attend, and learn about the court system, child protective services, and other local agencies that help domestic violence survivors.

Road Rage Victim Identified as Gilroy Man
Gilroy – The driver who died in an apparent road-rage crash was identified last week as Juan Angel Palomino-Meraz, 19, of Gilroy. Palomino-Meraz was driving a white Mercury Grande Marquis on U.S. 101 near Hellyer Avenue the morning of March 20, and began chasing another vehicle, eventually causing a two-car crash. The female driver of the other car was critically injured, and a passenger in Palomino-Meraz’ car suffered minor injuries.
Great Danes win, Crocco Takes Women’s Trophy
Gilroy – The Great Danes earned the team title in Saturday’s Big Slick Invitational Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament held at the Senior Center.
Rookies Leon Grider and Susan Patereau joined Tawnie Grider and Gina Blundo, veterans of all 11 tournaments put on by the Gilroy Community Services Department, to finish first among the field of 17 teams.
Joe Benavides claimed the individual title, outlasting Smokin’ Aces teammate Phil Cabrera in the one-on-one finale. The Smokin’ Aces finished second in team competition.
Rose Crocco earned her first Final Table award in 10 tries while capturing the Top Women’s Player award. The blind player topped the field of 14 females entered in the one-day event.
Proceeds from the Texas Hold ‘Em series benefit the youth, teen and senior programs in the department. The next tournament is scheduled for June 2.
Cesar E. Chavez Youth Leadership Conference
Gilroy- The Second Annual Cesar E. Chavez Youth Leadership Conference will take place at Gavilan College Saturday in the Student Center and Social Science buildings.
Workshops on indigenous culture, leadership, nonviolence, sexual health education, domestic violence, and gang and alcohol prevention will be presented, and keynote speaker Cesar Cruz will also be present.
Admission is free and lunch and dinner will be provided.

GHS Chamber Choir Preview Concert
Gilroy – Gilroy High School Chamber Singers Sayonara concert will be held at 7:30pm April 2 at the South Valley National Bank, located at 8800 Santa Teresa Blvd.
Admission is free as a “thank you” to all the residents of Gilroy for all of their support to the Chamber Singers, who will leave for their Japan Concert Tour on April 4.
This concert is a preview of the concert that will be performed in Japan.

Film Series for Adults
Gilroy – Adults 55 and older can participate in a free class/film series at Gavilan College. “Film Classics” is designed to study the facts, fantasy, history and trivia of classic and modern films. Instructor Grant Richards is a graduate of Gilroy High School and Gavilan College and teaches film history and film production at Gavilan College.

All films will be screened at the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse from 2 to 5pm Wednesday afternoons through June 6
