Morgan Hill City officials annex 74 residents

Morgan Hill – Morgan Hill City Council members have cleared the way to annex 15 so-called unincorporated pockets into the city, a move that will fill gaps in services and add tax revenue to city coffers.

The pockets are islands of county land that are surrounded by the city on at least three sides. When the annexations are completed later this year, a map of Morgan Hill will look a little less like an Octopus and a bit more like a well planned town.

The 15 islands are sprinkled around the city. They include 24 houses and about 74 residents, and will add 0.6 square miles to Morgan Hill, bringing the land mass to 12.3 square miles. The homes will add about $96,000 in property taxes to the city’s budget. Later this year, the city may act to annex Holiday Lake Estates, a large housing development above Anderson Reservoir.

Downtown Morgan Hill gun shop burglarized

Morgan Hill – Police recovered 29 guns in a backpack left behind by suspects who robbed a downtown gun shop early Saturday morning, police said.

Suspects may have gotten away with one gun, but the store owner said Monday morning that he did not want to comment and is still in the process of checking inventory.

The Morgan Hill Police Department SWAT team members converged on the store just after 3am after dispatchers received a call from an adjacent telemarketing business on West Second Street at Del Monte Avenue. An employee of the telemarketing business reported someone moving around in the attic, possibly inside the gun store.

When officers arrived on the scene two minutes later, it was not clear if the suspect or suspects were still in the store, according to Morgan Hill police Cmdr. Joe Sampson.

It appears the suspects entered the gun store through the attic it shares with the Ladybug Fitness gym, Sampson said.
