New U.S. 101 lane opens
MORGAN HILL
– Three of four southbound lanes on U.S. Hwy. 101 opened to
traffic between Metcalf and Cochrane roads on Wednesday. The fourth
High Occupancy Vehicle lane (HOV) is waiting for the storm expected
for today to pass before Valley Transportation Authority workers
can finish painting. It is expected t
o open next week. Plans are in place for the northbound lanes
between Cochrane and Bernal roads to open in early May.
Sounds of a brass band

GILROY – The South Valley Symphony is bringing back the “British style” Pacific Brass Band to perform at the Gilroy High School theater on Saturday, March 15 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are now on sale at Porcella’s Music and California Music Company in downtown Gilroy and Snappy Photo located at 785 First St. Tickets cost $12 for adults, $10 for seniors age 55 and up and $7 for students age 12 to 18. Bandmaster Gonzalo H. Viales C. and Associate Bandmaster Howard Miyata will lead the 35-member band. The repertoire of the band consists of traditional brass band music, as well as American folk songs, rags, marches and selections from musical theater. Details:

St. Paddy’s dinner

GILROY – St. Joseph’s Family Center will be holding its annual St. Patrick’s Dinner on Saturday, March 15 at the St. Mary’s Auditorium, 11 First St. Appetizers and no-host cocktails will begin at 6 p.m., with dinner served at 7 p.m. Included in the evening’s activities will be a raffle, silent auction and entertainment. Tickets are a donation of $25 each and may be purchased at St. Joseph’s Family Center, 7950 Church St., Suite A. You may purchase raffle tickets for $1 each, or $10 for a book of 11. Gala Auction and Dinner

GILROY – Pacific West Christian Academy will hold its sixth annual Spring Gala Auction and Dinner on Saturday, March 15. The event will be held at San Juan Oaks Country Club in San Juan Bautista. The school has recently purchased two acres in Gilroy with the goal of moving within three years, and needs help to make the move a success. Details: 847-7922.

Tony King memorial benefit

GILROY – Visit the Krazy Koyote from noon to midnight on Saturday, March 15 for the Tony King Memorial Benefit. Dance your feet off to the Kool Kats, Usual Suspects, Out of the Shadows, JJ Hawg and many others. There will also be a live auction, raffle and jump house for the kids. Swim with the Gators

GILROY – The Gilroy Gators Swim Team is holding its annual swim clinic and tryouts from 5 to 6 p.m. from March 24 through 28 at the Gilroy High School pool. Swimmers must be between the ages of 5 and 18 and know how to swim. Registration is $20 and can be done at the pool office between 5 and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday until March 21. Design a Gilroy flag

GILROY – Proud of your city? Then why not show your true colors – through art. Gilroy’s Youth Commission is currently holding a contest to design a “city flag” for Gilroy. The contest is open to all Gilroy residents. Flag designs should depict the city’s rich cultural heritage, use colors, be tasteful and creative and may use all or part of the current City of Gilroy’s symbols. Design entries must be submitted on 24-by-36 inch poster board, in color and be accompanied by a project entry form, which can be obtained at Gilroy City Hall, 7351 Rosanna St. Entries are due by the closure of City Hall on April 18 and can be submitted to the Community Services Department, 7351 Rosanna St. The winner receives no monetary compensation. The city plans to stage an inaugural flag-raising ceremony at the city’s Garlic Festival in July.

Help donate to Grad Night

GILROY – “Grad Nite,” a safe all-night lock-in for graduating seniors at Gilroy High School, is looking for donations and merchandise. This is a wonderful way to reward high school graduates for a job well done and encourage them to stay safe on graduation night.To donate, call 848-2405.

Chamber scholarship

GILROY – The Gilroy Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Program offers $4,000 in college scholarships to qualified high school seniors entering their first year of college this fall. One $2,000 scholarship, one $1,000 scholarship and two $500 scholarships will be awarded. To qualify, a student must be a Gilroy resident and/or attending a Gilroy Unified School District school; have an excellent record of experience in community and extracurricular activities; have career goals in business, industry or education; and graduate high school in June, 2003 with a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the last two years.
