Sounds of a brass band
GILROY – The South Valley Symphony is bringing back the “British style” Pacific Brass Band to perform at the Gilroy High School theater on Saturday, March 15 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are now on sale at Porcella’s Music and California Music Company in downtown Gilroy and Snappy Photo located at 785 First St. Tickets cost $12 for adults, $10 for seniors age 55 and up and $7 for students age 12 to 18. Bandmaster Gonzalo H. Viales C. and Associate Bandmaster Howard Miyata will lead the 35-member band. Details: 842-3934.
Coaches and players needed
GILROY – The Gilroy Community Service Department will be offering soccer leagues for youth 4 through 10 years of age. The 6- to 10-year-old divisions are separated by gender (providing minimum requirements are met) and will have a minimum of 12 players and a maximum of 14. League divisions are based on age. Games are on Saturdays and players will play at least one-half of every game. Practices are arranged by the volunteer coach.
Volunteer coaches are also needed for every team. Coaches may choose up to two players to be on their team, while, all other players will be assigned according to a closed-door draft. Swim clinic
GILROY – The Gilroy Gators Swim Team is holding its annual swim clinic and tryouts from 5 to 6 p.m. March 24 through 28 at the Gilroy High School pool. Swimmers must be between the ages of 5 and 18 and know how to swim. Registration is $20 and is taking place at the pool office between 5 and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday until March 21. Take control of your estate
GILROY – The American Family Law Offices are holding a free one-hour educational presentation on revocable living trusts on Thursday, March 27 at AL Post #217, 74 West Sixth St. at 7 p.m. Issues to be discussed include wills versus living trusts, how to avoid probate, conservatorship and eliminate unnecessary estate taxes. Take control of your estate and get your affairs in order. Couples are encouraged to attend together. Reservations are preferred, but everyone is welcome. Aviation scholarships
SAN MARTIN – The South County Airport Pilot’s Association (SCAPA), a non-profit organization, has funded two aviation scholarships. These scholarships will be awarded annually to promising young men or women who have a serious interest in aviation-related careers. The awards are in the amount of $500 each. Recipients must be enrolled in and plan to continue a college curriculum leading to a degree in the field of aviation, or, for high schoolers, must be accepted to a two or four year college with a major in an aviation-related field.
The initial funding has been generated through generous donations from the Gilroy PAL, significant individual donors and other Pilot fund-raising events. The SCAPA’s goal is to increase the number and amount of awards as funding increases.
Donations will be accepted from individuals or organizations interested in supporting the education of our youth. Roy jackson to be honored
MORGAN HILL – A special dinner dance and roast will honor Roy Jackson as he retires his position as president of Morgan Hill Pony Baseball. Jackson offered two decades of service to the communities of South Valley which have benefited more than 8,000 youths and their parents. The event will be held at Corde Valle, One Corde Valle Club Drive in San Martin, on May 10. No-host cocktails and hor d’oeurves from 5:30 to 7 p.m., entertainment by Mix Master Monte and Just Cuz. Tickets are $60 per person and can be purchased, mail-in only to the Las Palmas Restaurant, 779-7177 (411Vineyard Town Center Way, Morgan Hill) or by calling Kim Montarbo 779-7350. Tables of eight may be reserved at the time of ticket purchase for $25.
Show off that talent
MORGAN HILL – The Lighthouse Youth Center is sponsoring a talent show. Auditions will be held on Friday, March 28 between 6 and 10 p.m. for children ages 12 to 18. The talent show will take place on April 12 at 7 p.m. and is free. The Lighthouse Youth Center, a non-profit youth facility in Morgan Hill, has been in operation for four years and seeks to provide a drug-free, safe environment for teens. They are open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 8 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 6 to 10 p.m. and Sundays from 2 to 6 p.m. The center is located at 221 West Main St. Details: Director Shalea Adams, 782-5111.
