Golf Club, 2951 Club Drive. The evening kicks off with cocktails
and hors d’ oeuvres at 6:30 p.m., with casino playing beginning at

Choirs’ Concert

GILROY – The Gilroy High School Choirs will be presenting their 20th annual Fall Concert Tuesday, Oct. 28 and Wednesday, Oct. 29, at St. Mary Church, at the corner of First and Monterey streets. The Men’s Chorus, Women’s Chorus, Concert Choir, Concerto Delle Donne and the Chamber Singers will be performing. On Wednesday, special guest Brownell Academy Choir will also be performing.

Phillip Robb, now in his 20th year at Gilroy High, will direct the choirs. Music will range from Palestrina and Mozart to folk music from Tahiti and England.

Concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m., doors open at 7:10 p.m. A $3 charge at the door will go to help with the choirs and their expenses for the year. Parking is behind the church. Details: 847-2424.

Secure laughter

GILROY – Rod and Marion Pintello present “Social Security” at the Pintello Comedy Theater, 8531 Church St.

The play is based on the hilarious antics of two sisters trying to figure out where their elderly mother should live.

Play dates are set for Fridays and Saturdays, Oct. 24 through Nov. 15, at 8 p.m. Details: 776-8004.

Bands take the field

GILROY – Gilroy High School Marching Band and Color Guard invite the public to the 11th annual GHS Marching Band and Color Guard Competition on Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Mustang Stadium.

This music and dance extravaganza features 12 bands from all over Central and Northern California. Proceeds from the competition will be used to support Gilroy High School band programs, including transportation and maintenance and repair of instruments and uniforms.

Concession stands featuring pepper steak sandwiches, loaded with garlic and grilled vegetables, will be available.

Gates open at 5 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children. Competition begins promptly at 6 p.m. after the presentation of colors by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the singing of the National Anthem by GHS choir members. Details: 847-4629.

Friendly Church Festival

GILROY – First Baptist Church, 8455 Wren Ave., is holding a Children’s Harvest Festival on Friday, Oct. 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. Come dressed in your best “friendly” costumes. Details: 847-6000.

Dress up your pet

GILROY – Do you have a devilish dog? Or a frightening feline? Maybe a heavenly hamster? If any of your pets match these descriptions, or they just like to dress up in silly costumes, take them into PETCO, 8767 San Ysidro Ave., on Saturday, Oct. 25, at noon for the Howl-o-ween Pet Costume Contest.

All contestants will receive a Howl-o-ween goody bag filled with free surprises, and one lucky winner at each store will receive a $25 PETCO gift card. Additionally, all contestants will be entered in a grand-prize drawing for a year’s supply of Science Diet Advanced Protection dog or cat food. Pet parents are encouraged to dress up as well, to add to the Howl-o-ween excitement.

Kids can enter PETCO’s coloring contest. Each store winner receives a $5 PETCO gift card. Coloring sheets can be picked up at PETCO, and they are due back in the store Saturday, Oct. 25.

Tryout for youth basketball

GILROY – Sign up for basketball league tryouts. The Gilroy Community Services Department offers a competitive basketball league for boys and girls in grades 3 through 10. Teams are made up of 8 to 10 players. Each player must be prepared to play at least half of each game throughout the eight-game season. Each player will receive a team jersey; champion shirts will be given to division champions. Scholarships are available. Deadline for try-out registration is Thursday, Oct. 30, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Gilroy City Hall, 7351 Rosanna St. Tryouts are Saturday, Dec. 6. Details: 846-0460.

Halloween Spooktacular

GILROY – The Gilroy Premium Outlets and the Gilroy Police Department bring you Halloween Spooktacular on Friday, Oct. 31, from 4 to 6 p.m. Come enjoy a safe and fun Halloween at the Outlets. Kids can learn Halloween safety tips from the Gilroy Police Department. Free trick-or-treat bags and free candy will be given out by participating stores. It’s A wonderful appearance

GILROY – Karolyn Grimes, or “Zuzu” of “It’s A Wond-erful Life” will be making appear-ances in Gilroy on Sunday, Oct. 26. Tee off for Gav students

GILROY – The Gavilan College Educational Foundation holds its Golf Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Eagle Ridge Golf Club, 2951 Club Drive. The entry fee of $195 per person (or $700 for a foursome) includes the chance to hit a hole-in-one and win a South County Chrysler & Dodge vehicle, along with a day of fun and treats from companies like Coast Range and Pepsi. Plus, participants will receive a tee bag full of prizes and feel good about supporting the students of our community. Apply for Rotary grants

GILROY – The Rotary Club of Gilroy is currently accepting applications for community grants. The Club has allocated approximately $20,000 to grant to local community agencies this year.

Grant applicants should:

• emphasize education and/or youth, with local focus in Gilroy,

• be an organization, not a person,

• have a broad-based impact, and a specific use for the money needs to be designated.

The Rotary Club of Gilroy has distributed more than $110,000 in community grants over the past six years. Applications can be obtained from the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce, 7471 Monterey Road, or by calling Scott van Keulen at 842-5272 or Jay Baksa at 846-0202. An e-form is available. Safe Halloween fun

GILROY – Gilroy Presbyterian Church is having its first Harvest Fun Fest on Friday, Oct. 31, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church campus. There will be crafts, carnival games, hay rides, a bounce house, pumpkin decorating, dancing, hot dogs and trick or treats. Kids should come in costume. This is a free event for all to enjoy. Artist shares his journey

GILROY – Gavilan College Art Gallery presents “Francisco Franco: Educational Travels” through Oct. 31.

The exhibition chronicles the journey of an artist from California’s Central Valley, to Modesto Junior College, to the University of California, Berkeley, to the New York Academy of Art … and beyond. Works from each era are included to allow the viewer to experience the struggles and triumphs of a creative journey.

The Gavilan College Art Gallery is located in the Library building on the Gilroy campus, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s closed Saturday and Sunday. On-campus parking is 75 cents. Details: 846-4974.
