4 p.m. Enjoy wine and appetizers as while bidding on the silent auction items. Dinner will begin at 6 p.m., followed by a live auction and dessert. Some auction items include a summer house in the Tahoe Keys with private dock; tickets to all major Bay Area team events including Warriors, Sharks, 49ers, Raiders, Giants; an overnight stay in a Cor deValle bungalow for two with a round of golf for two. Tickets cost $200 per couple and can be purchased through the Gilroy Foundation Office at 842-3727 or online at www.gilroyfoundation.org. Guests can reserve tables for eight people. Purchase tickets by Monday, Sept. 1.
Orchestra odds and ends
GILROY – Rehearsals for musicians of the South Valley Symphony will commence today at 7:30 p.m. in room AL 101, located on the Gavilan College campus. Music Director and Conductor Henry Mollicone will be returning for his fourth season.
Rehearsals are held every Wednesday evening from 7:30 to 9:45 p.m., and college credits will be given to those who attend the majority of rehearsals and perform in the concerts during the fall and spring semesters.
This year marks the 30th season of the continuous operation for the orchestra. The opening concert is set for Saturday, Oct. 11 at the Gavilan College theater. Concert starting times this season have been moved up one half-hour to 7:30 p.m.

AAUW fall luncheon
GILROY – Prospective, current and at-large members of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) are invited to the fall membership luncheon at San Juan Oaks Golf Club in San Juan Bautista on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 11:45 a.m. Guest speaker Rebecca Hall will present “Not Killing Me Softly: African American Women in Slave Revolts.” Hall is an AAUW Educational Foundation fellow and a Ph.D. candidate in history at University of California at Santa Cruz. She has worked extensively with homeless people, survivors of domestic violence and asylum seekers. She taught law students how to represent low-income people in housing law, as well as tenant’s rights workshops throughout the Bay Area. Her career change from law to history was motivated by her realization that the answers she sought were to be found, not in litigation, but in structured patterns of race, class and gender.

Local artists exhibit their work
GILROY – Gilroy Community Services Department will hold the Gilroy Art and Culture Exhibit Sept. 11 through 14, at the Willey Cultural Center, 1400 Fifth St. All entries are due to the Willey Cultural Center on Sunday, Sept. 7, from 3 to 6 p.m. The Artists’ Award Reception will be help on Wednesday, Sept. 10, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The exhibit will be open from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 11 and 12 and from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 13 and 14. Pieces can be picked up on Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. Exhibits will be painting, drawing, printmaking, 3-dimensional, watercolor, mixed media, digital art, photography and textiles. Tee off in the dark
GILROY – St. Mary School is holding a Nite Golf Tournament Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Short Course at Santa Teresa Golf Course in San Jose on Bernal Road. Social hour will be at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. and shotgun start will be at 7:30 p.m. Cost to participate is a $75 donation, and guests’ barbecue tickets are $20.

Have a say in farm issues
SANTA CLARA COUNTY – The USDA Farm Service Agency is accepting nominations for 2003 county committee elections. Nomination forms are due by Friday, Sept. 5. If you have an interest in providing guidance on federal farm program issues impacting local farmers and ranchers, then you are encouraged to submit a nomination. All landowners, operators and tenants of legal voting age on farms within Santa Clara County are eligible to serve on the FSA Committee and vote in the election. Get a kick out of karate
GILROY – Karazenpo Karate Club is re-opening its doors in Gilroy. Come join a karate club that began in Gilroy 40 years ago. Saddle up with the Range Riders
GILROY – The Gilroy Range Riders Cowboy Mounted Shooters are holding practice on Sunday, Sept. 7, at the Horse Discovery Center located at 2440 Dryden Road, Gilroy. Practice will start at 9 a.m. and continue until 3 p.m. Monthly practices are normally held on the first Saturday of each month. CMAP seeks nominations
GILROY – Community Media Access Partnership, the community TV station for Gilroy, Hollister and San Juan Bautista, is currently looking for board members to fill three elected positions.
CMAP’s board of directors is comprised of city and school representatives, as well as interested residents, who make crucial decisions as to how CMAP is run. CMAP’s board meets the second Monday of the month at 6 p.m. in Hollister, Gilroy and San Juan Bautista.
Interested candidates must be CMAP members in good standing and must submit a nomination by petition form (available at the CMAP office and online at www.mycmap.org), obtaining 10 signatures of current CMAP members. Volunteer to deliver lunches
GILROY – Live Oak Adult Day Services, at 651 West Sixth St., is in need of a volunteer to pick up their elderly clients’ packaged lunches from the Senior Center one block away and bring them to the center at 11 a.m. every Tuesday. Wild weekends in the park
MORGAN HILL – Dan McCranie will guide hikers on a Middle Ridge Loop Discovery Hike at Henry Coe park Saturday, Aug. 30, at 10 a.m. The hike will be moderately strenuous or genuinely strenuous, depending on the preferences of the hikers who join him. Bring water, snacks and lunch.
The evening program beginning at 8 p.m. will focus on mountain lions. Rick Hopkins will show slides of these beautiful, powerful and controversial animals. He’ll talk about the mountain lion studies he conducted in the area.
