Attempted arson at Luigi Aprea School

GILROY – City police are looking for a young suspect thought to have tried to light a portable classroom on fire Tuesday at Luigi Aprea Fundamental School, at 9225 Calle Del Rey.

Police said at least one witness reported seeing a boy of about 12 years old running away from the area at about 6:10 p.m., the time the fire was reported.

City firefighters responded to what was reported as a grass fire near the portables. It was extinguished by the time they arrived, they reported, but it appeared that someone had tried to light the portable’s wood siding. The amount of damage to the portable is unknown.

Arson and attempted arson are felony charges and in this case would probably carry a maximum sentence of three years in prison for an adult, although consequences for a juvenile would likely be different.

Cleanup the creek

GILROY – Volunteers are needed Saturday to help spruce up about 40 miles of streams throughout Santa Clara County during the 19th annual Coastal Cleanup Day, sponsored by the Creek Connections Action Group.

Volunteers should report at 9 a.m. to one of 25 sites from Palo Alto to Gilroy for a three-hour tour of duty. Gilroy’s site is Uvas Creek at Christmas Hill Park.

Participants are asked to wear long pants, sturdy shoes and sunscreen. Creek-cleaning supplies and refreshments will be provided.

For more information, visit the Santa Clara Valley Water District Web site, www.valleywater.org; the Creek Connections Action Group site, www.cleanacreek.org, or call 265-2607, ext. 2238.

Last year’s event drew more than 1,200 volunteers who pulled thousands of pounds of trash and debris from county creeks in the annual autumn effort. Removing trash from creeks protects water quality and the habitat of the plants and animals that live in our creeks, and prevents pollution from flowing down the creeks to San Francisco and Monterey bays.

The Creek Connections Action Group is a consortium of public agencies and nonprofit organizations that share a goal of protecting Santa Clara County’s waterways.
