Driver hit by truck, pushed into tree
GILROY – An injured woman was airlifted from Westwood Drive Saturday after she pulled out in front of a truck, which broadsided her Honda.
City police and fire/paramedic officials said the woman, whose name was not released, pulled onto Westwood from Juniper Drive, a block south of First Street. The truck, which was towing a trailer southbound on Westwood, hit her car in the driver’s side door and pushed it into a tree. Fire department Division Chief Phil King said it appeared the driver of the truck was going 30 mph at the time of the accident.
Paramedics initially feared the woman’s injuries were severe because of extensive damage to the car, but the injuries turned out to be minor to moderate, according to King. The woman was wearing a seat belt, King said.
A CalSTAR helicopter landed in the former Nob Hill parking lot on Westwood and flew the woman to San Jose Medical Center.
Police did not say what caused the collision, but they did rule out a possible distraction caused by bikini-clad girls on Westwood advertising a tanning salon.
