Accident injures two
California Highway Patrol officers are still trying to sort out what caused a three-car crash that damaged 250 feet of guardrail on southbound Highway 101, just north of Leavesley Road.
Quendi Cook, a 21-year-old Santa Barbara resident and driver of a 1992 Acura Vigor, and an unnamed passenger in a 1994 Pontiac Firebird were injured as a result of the Sunday night wreck.
A CHP officer said he did not have names of any of the six other passengers involved in the accident or which cars they were riding in.
Cook was released from Saint Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy after being treated for an unspecified injury.
No health information was available for the passenger except that he or she was also treated at Saint Louise.
Francisco Gomez, 28, of Soledad, was driving the Firebird, according to the CHP.
The crash took place at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
Gomez was in the middle southbound lane, flanked by Cook on his left in a 1992 Acura Vigor and a 17-year-old Salinas girl on his right in a Plymouth Neon.
The drivers’ accounts of the accident were not entirely consistent, the CHP reported. Cook told CHP she was going about 80 mph and swerved when she saw Gomez entering her lane.
The 17-year-old said she saw both other cars spinning out of control and could not avoid hitting one of them.
Cook’s car ultimately rolled over, the CHP reported.

Get downtown going
GILROY – Thursday through Saturday, April 1 through 3, the City of Gilroy will hold a three-day community workshop at the Strand Theater, 7588 Monterey St., to give all residents and business interests an opportunity to tell planners what improvements should come to Gilroy’s downtown.
“We’re trying to blanket the community and get all the stakeholders involved,” said Planning Division Manager Bill Faus. “Every conceivable issue involving the downtown we want brought to the table.”
Results from the three-day session will be analyzed in a report by the city’s downtown consultant RRM Design Group which will then be presented to a special task force set up months ago to draft a Specific Plan.
The Downtown Specific Plan will be the guide for future land use decisions by city officials, including streetscape improvement goals and zoning rules that determine what kinds of businesses and residences can set up downtown.
