Help out your ‘hood

GILROY – The City of Gilroy Housing and Community Development, Gilroy Police Department Neighborhood Resource Unit, United Neighborhoods of Santa Clara County and South County Housing present “Gilroy Neighborhood Academy 2004,” at Krazy Koyote Restaurant, 8337 Church St., from 5:45 to 7:30 p.m. on these dates:

• On Tuesday, March 23, the theme Crime Prevention/Safe Neighborhoods will feature information on 9-11 versus non-emergency calls, gang awareness, graffiti and neighborhood watch.

• On Tuesday, March 30, “Building Your Neighborhood Association” will teach organizing and running a meeting, encouraging participation and building a stronger association.

• On Tuesday, April 6 “Getting the Word Out/Keeping Track of Finances” will be the last session.

Certificates will be awarded to those who attend all three sessions. Free and light refreshments will be provided. Seating is limited. Call Gilroy Police Department CSO Rachel Muñoz at 846-0524 if interested in attending.

Market with confidence

GILROY – The Gavilan Small Business Development Center will present “Small Business Marketing” on Wednesday, March 24, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Gavilan SBDC offices located at 8351 Church St., building E. This class is an overview of basic marketing strategies. The instructor will discuss creating a plan to successfully market your business products or services. Cost is only $20 payable in advance or at the door. Due to limited space, pre-register at 847-0373.

Be the Garlic Queen

GILROY – The Gilroy Garlic Festival Association will hold the 26th annual “Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen Scholarship Pageant” on Saturday, May 1, at 7 p.m. at the Gavilan College Theater. Admission is $5.

Contestant applications are now available through the Garlic Festival office, 7473 Monterey St., or by calling the office at 842-1625. Applicants must be between the ages of 18 to 24; a resident of Gilroy, San Martin, Morgan Hill, Hollister, San Juan Bautista or Aromas; a single female who has never been married and has no children; and a high school graduate by June 2004. Deadline to enter is Friday, March 26, at 5 p.m.

Contestants will be judged in the areas of personal interview, talent, evening gown and garlic speech. The garlic speech can consist of a song, skit or dance.

In addition to the selection of the 26th Annual Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen, scholarships will be awarded to many pageant contestants. The queen and members of her court will be awarded cash prizes, trophies and gifts. Details: Kim Lemos at

Spring into nature

MORGAN HILL – Henry Coe State Park will present a few spring programs this weekend at the Visitor Center. On Saturday, March 27 at 10 a.m., move into the flow of nature using skills perfected by the Native Americans with “Basic Skills for Interacting with Nature.” Mike Meyer will teach a few simple skills, including stalking and wide angle vision. Plan to spend 3 to 4 hours, and bring snacks and water.

Also at 10 a.m., guests can bring water, lunch and their own horse for “Guided Horse Ride” and learn about the wildflowers that grow in the southern area of the park with Pat Dallam and Mike Harper. Advance sign-ups are required. Contact Pat or Mike at 650-329-1181 or at mh***@pa*****.net.

At 8 p.m., join for the evening program “Coyotes” as Priscilla Campbell will reveal secrets about this clever, mischievous wild dog and tell you some tall, but true, tales.

Starry nights

LOS BANOS – Pacheco State Park will offer “Astronomy Nights” from sunset to 10 p.m. on Saturdays, March 27 and May 1. Join local astronomers to view the starry skies through numerous telescopes. Bring warm clothing and any food or drinks, as none will be available. The fee is the $4 per car state park use fee.

Swim with Gators

GILROY – The Gilroy Gator Swim Team will hold its annual swim clinic and swim team tryouts from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Gilroy High School pool Monday, March 29 through Friday, Apr. 2. Kids 5 to 18 who know how to swim can join the fun. Registration forms are available at the GHS pool office between 5 and 6 p.m. Registration form and fee of $20 must be received by Sunday, March 21 or a late fee of $5 will be charged.
