County department moving to Gilroy
Gilroy – Citing a tight budget year to come, the county’s public assistance department is moving its San Martin office to its Gilroy office on Leavesley Road.
The San Martin District Office of Santa Clara County Social Services Agency Department of Employment and Benefit Services moved to Gilroy Friday. Its clients, who receive health, financial, nutritional, and employment assistance, will be transferred to the Gilroy office beginning Monday.
The San Martin office opens about 50 new client cases and responds to more than 1,000 public inquiries per month, according to the county. About 60 percent of the 1,400 low-income families served are from Gilroy, while the rest are from South San Jose, Morgan Hill, San Martin, and unincorporated South County.
Social Services Agency Director Will Lightbourne, in an announcement about the move, said “it is always difficult to make choices that affect families when working with fewer staff and resources.”
The decision best serves the community in these lean economic times by putting existing staff and resources in one central location, Lightbourne said.
New applicants who want to apply for public assistance, Medi-Cal, and/or Food Stamp assistance may now visit the South County District Office at 190 Leavesley Road in Gilroy, 848-3900.
