GILROY – The American Red Cross will hold a Gilroy Community Blood Drive today from 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 8455 Wren Ave. To donate blood you must be 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health.

Volunteer blood donors are required to provide identification before donating blood. Preferred identifiers include a government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license, or a Red Cross blood donor card. Save time and make an appointment.

Find your fiction side

GILROY – Barnes and Noble, 6825 Camino Arroyo, will hold a ‘Fiction Workshop with Kat Meads’ tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Winner of a national short fiction competition, and author of several books of poetry.

The Santa Cruz writer will host an informal workshop and answer your questions about writing fiction. She will be using examples from her recent novel to discuss fiction techniques.

Run for art

GILROY – Bonfante Gardens presents the ‘2004 Reek 5/10K Walk/Run Race’ on Saturday, July 10. Proceeds will benefit the Gilroy Performing Arts Center. Registration will be at 6:45 a.m. and the race will start at 8 a.m.

Cost is $25 and includes a T-shirt, one free admission to Bonfante Gardens, free parking and a goodie bag.

Pick up T-shirts, goodies bag and racing bib Friday evening from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Gilroy Hilton Garden Inn or on race day.

Get in the garden

GILROY – Enjoy a walk through Bonfante Gardens’ exotic greenhouse and Claudia’s garden with Horticulturist Richard Soria with ‘Monarch and Claudia’s Gardens’ on Saturday, July 10, from 8 to 9:45 a.m.

Learn to recognize insects and their life cycles, and identify various conifers and topiaries.

Registration fee of $25, or $30 for non-residents, also includes admission to the park and free parking.

Bonfante Gardens is located at 3050 Hecker Pass Highway.

Poetry in Garlic City

GILROY – The Garlicky Group of Poets will hold their monthly meeting on Saturday, July 10, starting at 3:30 p.m. in the meeting room of the Gilroy Public Library, located at Sixth and Rosanna streets. Public participation is welcome and free.

Fun in the city

GILROY – South Valley Street Rods and Historic Downtown Gilroy present the fourth annual “Garlic City Fun Run” on Saturday, July 10, from 3:30 to 10 p.m.

Come and join the fun with live music, dancing, shopping, and great food at the ‘Mini’ Gourmet Alley downtown.

Wander through the shops of downtown and explore dozens of classic cars. Try your hand at winning prizes in the raffle.

Only cars pre-1972 will be accepted for show.

Cost to enter a car is $35, and includes an event T-shirt to those who register before July 10. Registration starts at 1 p.m. and all cars must be parked by 3:30 p.m.

No entries will be accepted after 3:30 p.m. Participants will be entered into a special drawing for a 350 crate motor and transmission. Merchant and VIP awards will be given out.

Proceeds from this event will go to local charities.
