Tryouts for girls softball team
Gilroy – Garlic City Bandits Tournament Sports Organization will conduct tryouts for girls 10 and younger softball team at 9am Saturday. The competitive girl’s softball team will play throughout the summer in various Bay Area Locations. Coaching staff led by Live Oak Alum Kristin Alvarado, member of 2001 CCS Softball Championship team and ACU Regional College Softball Championship team.Â

Van Houten to lead enviro group
Gilroy – The Committee for Green Foothills, an environmental nonprofit, announced that the group has hired San Mateo resident Holly Van Houten to lead the organization.
The committee is headquartered in Palo Alto and works for open space and natural resources protection throughout the San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.
Van Houten is not new to environmental work. She earned an M.A. in Urban Planning from the University of California, Los Angeles, and had a stint as a Senior Legislative Aide in the U.S. House of Representatives Interior Apprpriation Subcommittee where she worked to pass environmental conservation legislation.
Chris Powell, the president of the committee’s Board of Directors said in a press release, “Holly is a proven leader in the environmental field and we’re blessed that she has chosen to join the Committee for Green Foothills.”
Art of Living comes to Gilroy
Gilroy – The Art of Living course, where an ancient breathing technique, combined with meditation and several mild yoga exercises, is coming to Gilroy. This six-day breathing course can bring greater awareness, a fuller and happier life, less stress, greater mental focus and a bevy of other health benefits.
The Art of Living chapter has just started its programs in Gilroy, beginning today through Tuesday, June 6.

Symphony season ending
Gilroy – The South Valley Symphony will conclude its 32nd season with their annual POPS concert at the Gavilan College Theater Friday, June 2, commencing at 8pm. The orchestra will be under the baton of guest Conductor Anthony Quartuccio. In addition, the three winners of the Marian Filice Piano Competition held earlier this year at Gavilan College will perform. Ms. Trang Bui will perform three preludes by George Gershwin; Sathea Khay will perform a waltz by Chopin, while Adena Chen will perform a Rondo by R. Geier and Easy Variations by Mozart. Featured soloist Alan Chen, 18, will perform George Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F. He has studied the piano since age 7 and has won numerous awards.
Tickets are now on sale at Porcella’s Music Store located at 7357 Monterey St. and also at Carole’s Hallmark Store located at 779 First St. next to Nob Hill Food Store. Prices are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors ages 55 and older and $8 for students ages 12 to 18.

Volunteer painters needed
Gilroy – The Gilroy Police Department Neighborhood Resource Unit is looking for volunteer painters who want to make a difference in the community. Members of the unit will be painting a mural at the Santa Teresa Bridge at Third Street called “School Safe Passage for Kids.” Volunteers are invited to pick up a brush and help paint from 10am to 12pm, Saturday.

Advance Health Care Workshop
Gilroy – The public is invited to a free workshop on Advance Health Care Directive preparation, “Conversation Before A Crisis,” from 11am to 12:30 pm Saturday at the Gilroy Library, 7387 Rosanna St.
Advance Health Care Directives are simple but important legal documents. In California, the Directive includes both the Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare (naming a surrogate decision maker) and a Living Will (describing how you would like to be cared for when you can’t speak for yourself).
The class is presented by Bonnie Evans (certified to facilitate and complete Advance Healthcare Directives by Coda Alliance).
