Gilroy – Police arrested a Salinas woman on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, a felony, after she rammed her boyfriend’s car with her own sport utility vehicle.

Filipinas Debilla, 37, driving a Ford Escape near the Pacheco Pass Center, pursued the man, driving a Honda car, at 11:59pm Thursday following an argument, police said.

Debilla rammed the victim’s car twice, causing minor injury and totaling both vehicles, police said. She also damaged a tree and destroyed a shopping cart collection area in the Lowe’s parking lot, police said. She was booked into county jail.

2004 Great Garlic Cook-Off on TV

Gilroy – The Food Network will be rebroadcasting the 2004 Gilroy Garlic Festival Cook-off at 3pm Sunday.

More than $100,000 garlic fans strolled through the festival grounds, trying everything from garlic bread to garlic fries to garlic ice cream. There’s even a Mr. Garlic. But one of the highlights of the annual festival is the cook-off.

Meanwhile, the festival is now accepting recipes for the 2005 Great Garlic Cook-Off contest. Recipes must be original and specify at least six cloves of fresh garlic, or the equivalent packaged form of three teaspoons minced or chopped. It must serve six and take less than two hours to prepare.

The winner will receive $1,000 and an honorary crown of garlic. There’s a $750 award to the runner-up, $500 for third place and $100 to each of the remaining finalists.

Recipes for this year’s contest can be submitted to cl***@******************al.com or to the Gilroy Garlic Festival Association, Attn: Recipe Contest, P.O. Box 2311, Gilroy, CA 95021. Entries must be postmarked by May 1.

Stylists band together to support colleague

Gilroy – Six local hairstylists are banding together to help support a friend and colleague in need, K.C. Adams, a stylist in Gilroy for 20 years, whose son, Lowell Keith “JR” Adams recently died in an automobile accident while vacationing in Cancun.

These stylist are hosting a special Cut-A-Thon Benefit from 9am to 9pm Sunday at the Beauty Lounge. They will be offering clients a design consultation, haircut and style.

These industry professionals are volunteering their time and expertise for this event; there is no set fee. Clients are encouraged to contribute what they can in exchange for the services.

All money raised will be donated to the Adams’, to help defray expenses during this difficult time.

ICF scholarship breakfast Sunday

Gilroy – Branch 28 of the Italian Catholic Federation presents its semi-annual Scholarship Breakfast and Bake Sale Sunday April 3, 7:30 to 11:30am at St. Mary’s Church Cullen Hall, 11 First St.

Breakfast of scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, juice, milk and coffee will be served. Proceeds benefit branch 28 scholarship programs and other ICF charities.

Donation is $5 for adults and $3 children under 12.

Raffle supports softball program

Gilroy – Grade Point Average (G.P.A.) and Sports, a nonprofit girl’s softball organization, will be selling raffle tickets outside of Nob Hill, 777 First St. in Gilroy, every Friday through Monday in April.

The sale will be held from 3 to 7pm on Fridays, 8am to 5pm on Saturdays, 1 to 5pm on Sundays and 3 to 7pm on Mondays. The tickets cost $2 each or $5 for 3. The prizes are a shopping spree at Nob Hill in the amounts of $150, $250 and $500.

Proceeds will help pay for the cost of the Gilroy Stanford Cardinals’ softball games, including equipment and transportation. The drawing will be held on May 2. Participants do not need to be present to win.

G.P.A. is a nonprofit organization that helps girl’s keep their grades up and play sports. Players are required to keep a grade point average of at least 2.5. Rather than be kicked off the team if grades slip, girls are encouraged to improve with a tutor that the organization provides.

Annual Gators swim clinic next week

Gilroy – Gilroy Gator Swim Team will hold its annual “Swim Clinic and Swim Team Tryouts” Monday through Friday, from 5 to 6pm each evening at the Gilroy High School pool.

Swimmers ages 5 though 18 are invited to join in the fun.

Registration forms received after March 28 may be subject to a $5 late fee. Checks must be made payable to GGST.

Space is limited to the first 100 participants with a completed registration form and paid fee.
