great music-making tonight at their annual Pops Concert.

GILROY – The Gilroy High School Choirs will conclude another year of great music-making tonight at their annual Pops Concert. This year’s theme is music from the 1960s with an emphasis on music from Motown. The choirs will be singing the music of Mary Wells, The Dixiecups, The Angels, Dionne Warwick, Dianna Ross and the Supremes, the 5th Dimension, Neil Sedaka, the Beatles and The Angels to name a few. This year’s concert will also feature the local “oldies” band The Corvairs as the backup band.

The concert will be at the Gavilan College Theater. Tickets are $5 and will be available at the door. Doors will open for seating at 7:10 p.m. and the concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. It is the final concert of the year for the five choirs at Gilroy High, which involve over 160 students. The evening is combined with recognitions of many students and a final farewell to the seniors.

The Chamber Singers have been invited to sing the National Anthem on Friday, Sept. 26, at PacBell Park for the Giants/Dodgers game. The choirs have 300 tickets for that game available for sale beginning Thursday, June 5, before the Pops Concert. The tickets are upper reserved above left field and are available for $22. Skate board competition

GILROY – The Gilroy Youth Commission is sponsoring a skate board competition from noon to 8 p.m. at the skate park at Las Animas Park Saturday. Several bands will be featured, including Johnny Come Lately, Emenent, Habanero, Friction, Sputter Doll and Incomplete Thought. The talents of Ethan Krolick, Jesse Lamb, Bill’s Wheels Skate Team, Bane Skate Team and others will be exhibited. Details: 846-0460.

Tour historic Fifth Street

GILROY – Members of the Gilroy Historical Society lead free monthly walking tours of various historic areas around town. June’s tour is of Historic Fifth Street. Those interested should meet at the Gilroy Museum, 195 Fifth St. (the corner of Fifth and Church streets) at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 7.

Reservations are recommended but not required. The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Details: 848-0470.

Middle school orientation

GILROY – The staff at South Valley Middle School will present an orientation for all incoming sixth-and seventh-grade students and their parents tonight from 7 to 8 p.m. in the South Valley school gym. Topics include:

• Class offerings and selection process.

• What does a typical day look like at a middle school?

• What are accelerated and intervention classes?

• Elective classes – PE – enrichments activities.

• Aug. 21 orientation night at ASMS at

5 p.m.

• Getting your child ready for middle school.

New moms brunch

GILROY – The Gilroy Las Madres, an educational and social organization for the parents of infants, toddlers and preschool children, is hosting its annual New Members Brunch on Saturday, June 14, at 11 a.m. at Goldsmith Seeds, 2280 Hecker Pass Highway.

Expectant mothers and moms of children up to the age of 5 are invited to attend the brunch to meet current members and learn about Las Madres. Nursing babies are welcome. RSVP to Lara Orradre at 842-9346 or Christina Sullivan at 846-7791.

Hunt for treasure with dad

GILROY – The Father’s Day Antiques and Collectibles 2003 Street Fair will take place on Sunday, June 15, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monterey Street between Fourth and Sixth streets. Browse a great selection of furniture, toys, prints, linens, kitchen items, Hummels, garden items, glassware, pottery, china, jewelry and more.

Admission is free. There will be plenty of parking, food and entertainment.

On-site appraisers will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The first item is appraised for free, additional items are charged a nominal fee. There are 300 vendor spaces available. Details: Dave Peoples at the Nimble Thimble, 842-6501.
