GILROY – Rehearsals for musicians of the South Valley Symphony will commence on Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in room AL 101, located on the Gavilan College campus. Music Director and Conductor Henry Mollicone will be returning for his fourth season.
The orchestra is in need of violin, viola and cellists in the string section. There is also a need for at least two contrabass players for the volunteer orchestra.
There is also a need for bassoon, trombone and French horn players as well as a percussion player.
Rehearsals are held Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 9:45 p.m., and college credits will be given to those who attend the majority of rehearsals and perform in the concerts during the fall and spring semesters.
This year marks the 30th season of the continuous operation for the orchestra. The opening concert is set for Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Gavilan College theater. Concert starting times this season have been moved up one half-hour to 7:30 p.m.

Have a say in farm issues
SANTA CLARA COUNTY – The USDA Farm Service Agency is accepting nominations for 2003 county committee elections. Nomination forms are due by Sept. 5. If you have an interest in providing guidance on federal farm program issues impacting local farmers and ranchers, then you are encouraged to submit a nomination. All landowners, operators and tenants of legal voting age on farms within Santa Clara County are eligible to serve on the FSA Committee and vote in the election. Saddle up with the Range Riders
GILROY – The Gilroy Range Riders Cowboy Mounted Shooters are holding practice on Sunday, Sept. 7, at the Horse Discovery Center located at 2440 Dryden Road, Gilroy. Practice will start at 9 a.m. and continue until 3 p.m. Monthly practices are normally held on the first Saturday of each month. They will also be having additional practices in La Honda/Highway 84 at the Coastside Rodeo grounds/Driscoll Ranch on Saturday, Sept. 13. Details: www.gilroyrangeriders.com.
Clos LaChance harvest barbecue
SAN MARTIN – Visit Clos LaChance Winery on Sunday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m. to celebrate the harvest with a barbecue catered by San Martin Meats. CMAP seeks nominations
GILROY – Community Media Access Partnership, the community TV station for Gilroy, Hollister and San Juan Bautista, is currently looking for board members to fill three elected positions.
CMAP’s board of directors is comprised of city and school representatives, as well as interested residents, who make crucial decisions as to how CMAP is run. CMAP’s board meets the second Monday of the month at 6 p.m. in Hollister, Gilroy and San Juan Bautista.
Interested candidates must be CMAP members in good standing and must submit a nomination by petition form (available at the CMAP office and online at www.mycmap.org), obtaining 10 signatures of current CMAP members. This form, as well as a candidate statement (200 words maximum) must be delivered to CMAP by Thursday, Sept. 18, at 5 p.m. Details: 846-4983, ext. 6.
Tee off in the dark
GILROY – St. Mary School is holding a Nite Golf Tournament Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Short Course at Santa Teresa Golf Course in San Jose on Bernal Road. Social hour will be at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. and shotgun start will be at 7:30 p.m. Cost to participate is a $75 donation, and guests’ barbecue tickets are $20.

United say silicon valley
SAN JOSE – United Way Silicon Valley has received two grants from Bank of America totaling $100,000 to help launch its new Success By 6 early childhood development initiative.
Success By 6 is active in more than 300 communities. Its goal is to help prepare children to succeed by the time they begin school.
Bank of America Foundation made two grants to UWSV for Success By 6 totaling $100,000, including a $75,000 national award through United Way of America. The national award is part of an unprecedented five-year, $50 million commitment to Success By 6 by Bank of America.
United Way Silicon Valley President and CEO Mark Walker said UWSV has just begun its Success By 6 initiative and is working collaboratively with a number of community organizations and leaders to define its focus.
