Help send GHS team to finals
GILROY – Gilroy High School’s team The Full Deck placed first in their division at the state finals in Fresno in April, earning the right to participate in Knoxville, Tenn. at the global finals competition. More than 8,000 participants will be in Knoxville this month to demonstrate their solutions to the Destination ImagiNation Team Challenges that range from technical to mechanical to historical and theatrical. Teams from across the United States and around the world, including the first-ever Israeli teams, will spend four days in tournaments.
The Gilroy team needs sponsors to help send them to the DI Global Finals. The cost of sending the team and all of its props to Knoxville is estimated to be around $1,000 per student. Volunteer for creek cleanup
SANTA CLARA COUNTY – The Creek Connections Action Group is seeking volunteers this Saturday, May 17, to help clean up about 40 miles of creeks throughout Santa Clara County during the seventh annual National River Cleanup Day.
Volunteers should report at 9 a.m. to any one of the 25 sites. Gilroy’s is Uvas Creek at Christmas Hill Park, 10th Street at Miller Avenue. Gather in the southeast parking lot. Participants are asked to wear long pants, sturdy shoes and sunscreen. Creek supplies and refreshments will be provided.

Get certified
GILROY – Gilroy Community Services is offering a Lifeguard Training Class which will offer certification as a Lifeguard. The class will be taught at Gilroy High School Pool for two consecutive weekends; May 24 and 25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and May 31 and June 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost for the class is $120. Students must attend all classes. The instructor will be Aaran Bueno from City of Milipitas Aquatics Center. Registration may be done through Gilroy Community Services. Do-it-herself workshops
GILROY – Local women are taking part in a continuing series of “Do-It-Herself” Nights at all Northern California Home Depot stores on Wednesday, May 14, starting at 7 p.m.
The special clinics are part of an on-going series of free workshops aimed at the increasing number of women who enjoy tackling home improvement projects themselves. Taught by Home Depot’s skilled associates, many of whom are former trades people, the clinics offer several opportunities for hands-on practice of the techniques learned.

Spruce up home and garden
GILROY – The fourth annual South Valley Home, Garden and Culinary Expo will be held Saturday, May 17 and Sunday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Gavilan College. This year’s Expo is the largest yet and features local contractors and landscapers as well as unique products not found in stores.
For inside your home, you’ll find faux painters, custom window treatments, cooking products, kitchen and bath remodeling and unique grandfather clocks. For outside your home, you’ll find inspiring landscaping ideas and contractors, pools, ponds and landscape lighting. The Expo will also feature businesses that offer services from screen repair to pond maintenance. Local nurseries will be selling plants that thrive in South County gardens and other vendors will offer fountains, pottery and custom patio furniture.

Build the arts in Gilroy
GILROY – On Saturday, May 17, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. local performing and visual arts lovers will have an opportunity to attend an arts conference at the Strand Theater. Charles Morales, Gilroy City Councilman, will speak on “the politics of art – building a strong political voice.” Christina Goodney, from Young Audiences Silicon Valley, will focus on the role of non-profits in the infusion of arts into the educational curriculum. Diem Jones will talk about the role of his agency, Arts Council Silicon Valley, in Santa Clara Valley. Local art groups will all have an opportunity to inform the conference about their activities and roles in the community. Table top discussions will be held in the afternoon to help individuals and groups to improve their marketing, fund raising and organizational skills. Rucker debuts ‘Stuart Little’
GILROY – Rucker Theater Arts will present “Stuart Little,” a full length musical from the book by E.B. White. School performances will be held Tuesday, May 20, 21, 22, 23 at 9 a.m. Public performances will be Friday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, May 24 at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets for public performances are $5 for adults and $3 for children. GILROY – Donate blood and help save a life on Wednesday, May 14, at the First Baptist Church at 8455 Wren Ave. from noon to 6 p.m. To make an appointment to donate blood, visit BeADonor.com or call, (800) GIVE-LIFE. In order to donate blood you must be 17 years of age or older, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health.
Your donation may save as many as three lives – from a premature newborn to a cancer patient undergoing chemotherapy to an accident victim. The blood supply has dropped to less than three days’ level. The American Red Cross needs new donors to offset the cancellation of up to 60 percent of donation appointments in the previous week.
Protect the entire family
GILROY – The First Annual Gilroy Children’s Safety Weekend will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18, at the Hilton Garden Inn. This will be the first event of its kind in Gilroy where the community can learn and implement precautionary safety methods in order to protect the entire family. The event will be both educational and fun-packed for the entire family with demonstrations in self-defense, personal safety and first-aid education. Local businesses will also show their support by demonstrating home and personal safety equipment as well as offering free children’s car safety-seat inspections. This year’s event will see the KlassKids Foundation taking center stage. IHN International has formed a strategic partnership with the KlassKids Foundation for the event to bring a KlassKids Print-A-Thon during the entire weekend. Open studios tour 2003
GILROY – Three local artists Evelyn Klein, Julie Franco and Susana Lasta will present their art works in the 13th Annual “Open Studios Tour 2003,” sharing the space at the Equinox Press Art and Printmaking Studio. Artists will be printing their works during the tour and discussing the process involved. Gav student art exhibit
GILROY – Currently on exhibition at the Gavilan College Art Gallery are works by Gavilan College students created throughout this academic year. The exhibition includes works on paper, acrylics, watercolor, oil paint, ceramics and mixed-media. Also in the exhibition are mural designs by the OJO Mural Program – with an anticipated unveiling of this year’s mural created for El Portal Leadership Academy. Strength training for women
MORGAN HILL – The Mt. Madonna YMCA, located at 17666 Crest Ave., announces Strength Training for Women. Classes are offered on Mondays beginning May, 12 through June 9, from 11 a.m. to noon. Aviation scholarships
SAN MARTIN – The South County Airport Pilot’s Association (SCAPA), a non-profit organization, has funded two aviation scholarships. These scholarships will be awarded annually to promising young men or women who have a serious interest in aviation-related careers. The awards are in the amount of $500 each.
Recipients must be enrolled in and plan to continue a college curriculum leading to a degree in the field of aviation, or, for high schoolers, must be accepted to a two or four year college with a major in an aviation-related field. The initial funding has been generated through generous donations from the Gilroy PAL, significant individual donors and other Pilot fund-raising events. The SCAPA goal is to increase the number and amount of awards as funding increases. Donations will be accepted from individuals or organizations interested in supporting the education of our youth.
