Gilroy – The Gavilan College Small Business Development Center presents ‘QuickBooks 2004,’ a three-workshop series, on Thursday, from 6 to 8pm at the SBDC office, located in the Dry Creek Village, 8351 Church St., Building E.

QuickBooks 2004 is one of the most widely used small business accounting software programs available to small business owners. Learn to manage and reconcile business accounts, write and print checks, keep track of income and expenses, accounts payable and receivable, invoicing, inventory, payroll, purchase orders, estimating and many other tasks relevant to running a successful business.

Feel free to bring your laptop with QuickBooks 2004 already installed. Cost is $90 payable in advance.

Gilroy – Learn why customer service skills are so important, the keys to quality service and the 10 deadly ‘sins’ of customer service. Gain the tools to deal with challenging customers and good customer service strategies and much, much more.

The workshop will be held from 10am to noon, Sept. 8, at the Gavilan College SBDC offices, in the Dry Creek Village at 8351 Church Street, Bldg. E., Gilroy, and from 10am to noon, Sept. 1, at the Community Services and Workforce Development Office, 1131 San Felipe Road, Hollister.

The cost for this two-hour workshop is $20 payable in advance or at the door. Due to limited space, please call in advance to pre-register (408) 847-0373.

Office hours are 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, closed Saturday and Sunday. Special arrangements for people with disabilities will be made if requested five days or more in advance of program date.

Learn the history

of Henry Miller

Gilroy – Learn the history of Henry Miller at Mt. Madonna while exploring the historic Miller Estate ruins with a park ranger from 10am to noon Saturday. Discover the rich history of Mt. Madonna. Meet at the park office/visitor center. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing for an easy one-mile walk. Fee is $5 per vehicle to enter park.

Car wash fundraiser for Chaos softball

Gilroy – Chaos Girls’ Fast Pitch Team is hosting a “Car Wash Fundraiser” on Saturday, from 8am to 4 pm at Jim’s Auto Repair, 298 First St. Let the girls wash your car for a small donation and help them get to the 2004 Las Vegas Fall Classic Tournament.

Donations for washes are $5 for cars, $10 for trucks, SUVs and vans. Any extra donations are also very much appreciated.

South Bay music makers meet Saturday

Gilroy – South Bay Music Makers, a group for music lovers and makers, will hold its third meeting on Saturday, at 1pm in the Uvas Valley home of Candace Fazzio. Using a ‘open miked’ format, South Bay Music Makers invites musicians of any age or level of advancement to share their favorite repertoire. Piano solos or duets, instrumental players and/or singer are all encouraged to come share their talents and love of music.

Ride along Coyote Creek trail

San Jose – Take a “Coyote Creek Bike Ride” from 10am to 1pm on Sunday and discover nature by bike on this easy to moderate six-mile ride with a ranger along the Coyote Creek Trail. Meet at the Hellyer Park Velodrome. Bring a bike, helmet, repair kit, water and light snacks. A $5 vehicle fee will apply.

Challenge the mountain

Gilroy – The South Valley Symphony will hold “The Mount Madonna Challenge,” a fundraising event, on Sunday.

Also sponsored by the Gavilan Joggers and Striders, the event will feature a ‘6K Salamander Walk and Race’ beginning at 8:30am followed by the ’12K Mt. Madonna Challenge Race’ at 9am. Registration begins at 7:30am.

All entries are to report to the Spring Lake picnic area site at the base (Gilroy side) of Mt. Madonna County Park on Highway 152. Pre-registration fees are $20 with shirt, or $13 without. Medals will be awarded to the first three places in each age group in both races, while trophies will be awarded to the first place man and woman in the 12K race only.

Completed registration forms should be made payable to the South Valley Symphony, Mt. Madonna Challenge, and mailed to P. O. Box 1347, Gilroy, CA 95021-1347. T-shirts will be guaranteed for all pre-registered entrants. Online registrations may be done at ‘active.com’ or ‘allsportrunning.com.’

Rummage sale benefits SM animal shelter

San Martin – Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter (FOSMAS) is preparing for their third annual rummage sale to be held in September. Donations of usable household goods, clothing, pet supplies, etc., are now being accepted.

Clean out the house while contributing to help animals at the shelter through a tax deductible donation.

Donations may be dropped off at the San Martin Shelter, 12370 Murphy Ave., Monday through Saturday, except Tuesdays, from noon to 5pm.  

San Martin 4-H registration meeting

San Martin – The San Martin 4-H Youth Development Club welcomes new members. The program is for youth ages 5 through 18 that provides opportunities to learn from a choice of about 24 projects ranging from horse, magic, reptiles, guinea pigs, photography and the newest, astronomy.
