GILROY – A major fundraising event of the South Valley Symphony, the Mount Madonna Challenge, will be held on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004.
This year’s event will feature a 6K Salamander Walk and Race beginning at 8:30 a.m. followed by the featured 12K Mt. Madonna Challenge Race beginning at 9 a.m. The race is being sponsored by the Gavilan Joggers and Striders and the South Valley Symphony.
All entries are to report to the Sprig Lake picnic area site at the base (Gilroy side) of Mt. Madonna County Park on Highway 152.
Pre-registration fees are $20 with shirt, $13 without. Completed registration forms should be made payable to the South Valley Symphony, Mt. Madonna Challenge, and mailed to P. O. Box 1347, Gilroy, CA 95021-1347.
T-shirts will be guaranteed for all pre-registered entrants. Online registrations may be done at active.com or allsportrunning.com.
Registrations received after Aug. 24, 2004, will be priced at $25 with shirt and $18 without. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. day of race.
Medals will be awarded to the first three places in each age group in both races, while trophies will be awarded to the first place man and woman in the 12K race only.

Symphony rehearsals
GILROY – Rehearsals for the opening concert of the South Valley Symphony will begin at 7:15 p.,m., Wednesday, Aug. 25 at in the band room B-7 at Ascension Solorsano Middle School, 7121 Grenache Way.
Openings exist throughout the string section, including violin, viola, cello and contrabass and while no auditioning is required, prospective musicians should have a working knowledge of reading music.
Openings also exist in the trombone, French horn and percussion sections.
The orchestra will perform a series of five concerts in this, its 31st season. There is no cost to enroll, since as a class of Gavilan College, all registration fees are paid for through fund raising efforts, donations, and grants by the orchestra’s board of directors.

Computer classes
GILROY – Free Adult Computer Classes – Learn basic computer usage, manage your library account online, and learn how to use library databases, the catalog, Microsoft Office XP Pro software, and search the Internet successfully.
Free adult computer classes are held the second Tuesday of every month, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., at Gilroy Library, located at 7387 Rosanna (at 6th) in Gilroy.

Free composting classes
MORGAN HILL – The cities of Gilroy and Morgan Hill in coordination with the Santa Clara County Home Composting Education Program are sponsoring a free ‘Composting Basics’ workshop in Morgan Hill from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Aug. 14.
Admission is free, and all interested adults are invited to attend and learn the ABC’s of backyard and worm composting in a fun and informative two-hour classroom experience.
Learn to recycle ‘garbage’ – yard waste and food scraps – into the valuable soil amendment known as compost.

Kitten and puppy season
MORGAN HILL – The Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter (FOSMAS) need help to find loving families for the many homeless companion animals currently at the Shelter and in foster homes.
Please come to the FOSMAS pet fair on Saturday and Sunday, from noon to 5 p.m., at Petco, Morgan Hill (corner of Tennant and Monterey). Get the write stuff
GILROY – The Director of the East of Eden Writing Conference will speak at the new Barnes & Nobles, 6825 Camino Arroyo, in Gilroy, about how to get the most out of a writers conference, the do’s and don’ts of winning the contest, schmoozing with the right people and wowing an agent on Aug. 14, 2 p.m.
Whether you’re an experienced conference-goer or an amateur with a great story, you’ll appreciate the facts and strategies, wit and wisdom in this presentation on the in’s and out’s of writers conferences.
Beth Proudfoot, award-winning author and Director of the East of Eden Writers Conference,will present the inside scoop on which writers conferences to go to and how to use your time and money wisely once you’re there.
Proudfoot is a professional speaker noted for her engaging, humorous style, and her experience on both sides of the podium will be helpful to anyone wondering if a writers conference is right for them.
Kids’ history tour
GILROY – The Gilroy Historical Society will hold their free monthly walking tour on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Gilroy Museum, 195 Fifth St. This month’s tour is ‘The Children’s Tour,’ which will feature places of interest to our local young ones. Discover the history and sites right in your own home town. Reservations are recommended but not required.

ice cream social
GILROY – The Gilroy Historical Society invites everyone to celebrate summer the old fashioned way with an ‘Ice Cream Social’ on Aug. 12, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Willey Cultural Center, 140 Fifth St.
Enjoy ice cream with homemade toppings and ragtime piano music played by local virtuoso Candace Fazzio. he public is invited for $5 per person, or join the Society that evening to get in free. George and Genelle Azevedo will also provide antique car rides for only $5 per person.
Proceeds will benefit the Society’s Newspaper Preservation Project for the Gilroy Museum.
