Gilroy– The City of Gilroy Community Services Department and John Bisceglie present the final performances of ‘Disco Island,’ an annual Summer Children’s Theater Production, in the South Valley Junior High School Cafeteria, 385 I.O.O.F. Ave., at 7:30 pm.

Come ‘feel the heat’ and ‘dig the beat’ in this tropical island paradise and take the ultimate musical trip back to the 1970’s. Performances continue Thursday, Aug. 19; Friday, Aug. 20; and Saturday, Aug. 21. Doors open at 7pm for open seating.

Tickets are $10 per person. All proceeds will benefit the City of Gilroy Youth Programs.

Learn Latino culture

Gilroy – Mexican American Community Service Agency (MACSA) announces its tenth annual ‘Art Fair/Kid’s Carnival’ on Friday, Aug. 20 from 3 to 7 pm at San Ysidro Park. Enjoy a day filled with colorful visual and performing Latino cultural arts of all mediums. Kids receive free food, games, prizes and art activities. Admission is free, so bring the whole family.

Act in a modern story

Gilroy – South Valley Civic Theatre is holding auditions for its teen show ‘Once Upon a Mattress,’ directed by JoAnna Evans, on Saturday, Aug. 21, from 10am to 2pm at SVCT warehouse behind Kelly Moore Paints on Monterey Road, just north of Leavesley Road.

Youths ages 13 through 19 are invited to check in a half-hour prior to audition time, bring a prepared song with sheet music or CD and wear comfortable clothing and dance shoes. Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, the new spin on the familiar classic ‘The Princess and the Pea’ provides for some side-splitting shenanigans.

Performances are set for 8pm Oct. 29, 30, Nov. 5, 6, 13, 19, 20 and 2pm Nov. 7, 14 and 20.

Cars in the ‘hood

San Martin – The second annual San Martin Neighborhood Alliance (SMNA) ‘Happy Days Car Show Fundraiser’ will be held in the San Martin Country Park from 11am to 6pm, Saturday, Aug. 21.

Food, fun and live music of the JJ HAWG band! Admission is $5. A $20 fee includes T-shirt.

Rummage for Rover

SAN MARTIN – Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter is preparing for its third annual rummage sale to be held in September. Donations of usable household goods, clothing, pet supplies, etc., are being accepted. Donations may be dropped off at the San Martin Shelter, 12370 Murphy Ave., Monday through Saturday, except Tuesdays, from noon to 5 pm.
