Gilroy – Ascencion Solorsano Middle School will host a barbecue and silent auction/raffle to support its athletics teams on Friday from 5 to 8pm, and the auction will continue until Saturday, Sept. 25 at 11am.
More than $700 in prizes, including a two-night stay in Carmel, will be raffled. Tickets will be sold that evening for $1 each, 6 for $5, and 15 for $10. (Need not be present to win.) A DJ, Martial Arts and dance demonstrations are scheduled for entertainment.
Plus, Sweet Retreat and It’s a Grind will be selling ice cream and coffee.
Barbecue meals may be purchased in advance.

Safe Night presents ‘Carnival in the Park’
Gilroy – Safe Night presents “Carnival in the Park” on Saturday, Oct. 2 from 3 to 6pm at San Ysidro Park, located at the corner of Murray and Chestnut streets.
Bring the family for children’s activities, jump houses and slides, face painting, clowns, balloons, live music, food and raffle prizes.
Meet the Gilroy Police Department, including canine and horse officers, and explore the DARE car.
Entertainment from Izkaili Aztec Dancers, Allison Barnes Irish Dance Academy, Stompin! and many more.
Plus Mayor Al Pinheiro and Assemblyman Simon Salinas will join in for a Peace Pledge.

Sign ups slated for junior basketball
Gilroy – South County NJB sign-ups, for boys and girls in grades 3 through 8, for the 2004 through 2005 basketball season will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 2 and 3 between 10am and 2pm in the Sears parking lot, located at 835 First St. Look for the blue canopy.
Registration fees this season are $150 per player.
There is a 10 percent discount for each additional sibling that signs up.
Bring a copy of players birth certificate, most recent report card and utility bill for address verification.

Past, future of Gav baseball on hand
Gilroy – Gavilan College’s baseball program will feature its future and its past in a pair of special events set for October.
On Oct. 8, the program’s future will be the focus at a Golf Tournament fundraiser at the Gilroy Golf Course.
The tournament includes a noon shotgun start, and all alumni, players and supporters are invited.
All proceeds benefit the Rams baseball program.
The following day, on Saturday, Oct. 9, the Gavilan baseball program’s past will be highlighted at an Alumni Baseball Game set for the “Home of the Rams,” the Gavilan College baseball field. The game is scheduled for noon and Gavilan baseball coach Neal Andrade said longtime Coach Bob Nickerson’s jersey will be retired at the game. All former Gavilan baseball players are invited to play.

Pasta galore at Ottobre Festa Italiana
Gilroy – The Italian Catholic Federation Branch 28 in Gilroy is sponsoring Ottobre Festa Italiana on Oct. 9, in Cullen Hall at St. Mary Church, 11 First Street.
The dinner of pasta and sausage, salad, garlic bread and dessert, will be served at 6:30pm with a social hour beginning at 6pm.
Free beer, sponsored by Coast Range Brewery, wine and cold drinks also will be available.
Tickets are $20 for adults, and all proceeds will benefit ICF charities.

Alzheimer’s Memory Walk at Treasure Isle
San Francisco – The Alzheimer’s Association will hold its annual “Memory Walk at Treasure Island” on Sunday, Oct. 9. Registration starts at 7:30am and the walk begins at 9:30am.
Special appearances include former San Francisco Mayor Willie L. Brown Jr. and CBS Eyewitness Sports Director Dennis O’Donnell.
Free shuttles from the Embarcadero BART station on Market Street will be provided for travel to and from Treasure Island.
Participants are encouraged to make a $25 minimum donation. Food, prizes, music and entertainment will be offered in the morning.
A Family Pavilion will also be featured with lots of kids’ activities and a remembrance area to give tribute to Alzheimer patients.

Gilroy – The YMCA of Santa Clara Valley has launched fall registration of youth and adult sports, child care and wellness programs at its seven branches throughout Santa Clara Valley.
The YMCA offers a wide variety of sports, youth and wellness programs in addition to child care, after school and Teen Centers.

Host a foreign exchange student
The Pacific Intercultural Exchange is looking for families to host foreign high school students between the ages of 15 and 18.
The students speak English, have their own spending money, carry accident and health insurance and are excited to share their cultural experiences with a host family. Families are eligible to claim a $50 per month charitable contribution deduction on their itemized tax returns for each month they host a student.

Host families needed for exchange students
Gilroy – Families are needed to host guests from Gilroy’s sister city of Takko-Machi, Japan from Oct. 28 to 30.
Ten Takko Junior High School students and two teachers will be making the trip to Gilroy and would like to enjoy the hospitality of Gilroy families.
