The State Assembly voted 63-1 to restore $16.3 million in funding for California’s 94 domestic violence shelters, including four in Santa Clara County. Yet, the bill sponsored by Sen. Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) failed to pass the State Senate over the weekend.
The bill did not receive any “no” votes in the Senate, but fell short of the 27 “ayes” necessary for passage. Gilroy’s Democratic representative, Sen. Elaine Alquist, voted in favor.
The closest nonprofit emergency shelter that receives state funding and provides a legal counseling service and 24/7 crisis hotline is Morgan Hill-based Community Solutions, which employs more than 85 employees in Gilroy, Hollister and Morgan Hill. The nonprofit is facing a $200,000 cut, but President and CEO Erin O’Brien has vowed to keep the doors open at the organization’s confidential shelter, which housed about 150 women and children in 2008.
