Though this is true most of the time, it isn’t true all the time. To ensure that when your divot is going at your target a straight shot will follow, your stance must first be correct.
If your stance is aiming to the right of your target, you can then cut across your body with your swing and your divot will be going at your target. The results of that shot will most likely be a slice even though your divot is straight at your target.
Your stance needs to be aiming at your target or “open” your feet so your stance aims slightly left. Therefore, a divot at the target is made from a swing that goes correctly down the target-line and not cutting across the target-line with a closed stance.
Where the ball starts out is where you directed it by your swing. Where it ends up is where your club-face was aiming at impact. Keep those laws in mind and you will be able to understand and correct many sliced and hooked shots.
