A motorist crashed into a parked car in downtown Morgan Hill, tying up traffic in the afternoon commute, police said.

About 2:46 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to a call of a Toyota Tercel that crashed into a parked Toyota van, according to Morgan Hill Detective Joe Burdick.

The crash happened on the southbound side of Monterey Road near the intersection of Fourth Street.

A witness to the crash reported the driver of the Tercel, the only occupant of the vehicle, might have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Burdick said.

When officers arrived, the driver, a 47-year-old man, was inside the vehicle, “conscious but in a catatonic state” and not responding to police and paramedics on the scene, police said.

The driver was removed from the vehicle and transported to Saint Louise Regional Hospital, Burdick said.

Police do not know if the driver was under the influence, or suffering from some other unknown ailment or condition.

The accident is under investigation, Burdick said.
