A man stabbed his roommate in the eye early Friday morning, and the victim is still in intensive care with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Police responded to a call of a fight on West Fourth Street in Morgan Hill about 1 a.m. Friday.

When officers arrived at the residence, they determined from witnesses that a fight between two of the home’s residents resulted in one of them being stabbed in the eye with a knife, according to Morgan Hill Detective Ken Howard.

The suspected stabber, later identified as 27-year-old Julio C. Hernandez, was not present at the scene when police arrived, and had fled on foot. A resident of Terracina Apartments on East Dunne Avenue called police minutes after the incident to report she heard someone running through her yard.

Police caught up with Hernandez about 2 a.m. He was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

According to witnesses who know Hernandez, he has only lived in Morgan Hill about a month, police reports said. Police reports indicate Hernandez had warrants from the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office for numerous traffic violations, including driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The victim was described as an adult male, and was transported to a hospital in San Jose.
