Dr. Robert Stone McClintock, 88, of Reno died July 7, 2003, at home.
He was born Aug. 18, 1914, in Iowa to Pearl and Terry McClintock. Bob and his two surviving brothers, Bill and Howard, were raised in Sioux City, Iowa.
Bob received his medical degree from the University of Iowa in 1939, and married Betty Newcomb. They had five children: Marilyn, Robert (deceased), Molly, Lois, and Paul. Soon after, he joined the Coast Guard as a physician in World War II.
In 1952, Bob returned to the University of Iowa to obtain specialty training in orthopedics. He and Betty moved to San Jose, where he joined a small orthopedic practice. Bob started his own orthopedic practice in Los Gatos and later in Gilroy and eventually moved to Reno in 1976 due to the malpractice insurance crisis in California. Bob was very proud that his youngest son, Paul, followed in his footsteps and became a physician.
While working as a physician in Student Health at the University of Nevada, Reno, he met and married his current wife Ingrid. They raised two daughters, Holly and Sonja. He was proud of his seven children, 15 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Bob didn’t know the meaning of the word “retirement,” and was working as an active physician until the day he died. He would travel anywhere in the world for those in need, and was a frequent volunteer on the hospital ship, H.O.P.E His caring and sensitive manner was a source of comfort and trust for his patients, friends, and strangers. Bob was a musician, traveler, athlete, and was also a great lover of the arts. One of his favorite memories was his yearlong travel on a motorcycle through Europe with his brother, Bill, in 1934.
“Doc” will be missed by his family, friends and patients.
A private memorial service was held July 9.
The family asks that any donations be made to the Carmel of Reno, 1950 Lafond, Reno, NV 89509.
