The Gilroy Police Department is targeting drunk drivers this Memorial Day weekend with a DUI checkpoint and using extra DUI-focused patrol officers.Â
Â
The checkpoint will begin at 9 p.m. on May 25 and last until 2:30 a.m. at an undisclosed location within the city limits that police believe will be a prime spot for catching drunk drivers.Â
Â
Drivers caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspension, and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes, court probation and other expenses that can exceed $10,000.Â
Â
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies. Funding for the checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Â
According to a press release from the GPD, drunk drivers in Gilroy during the past year have cost one person their life and caused 26 injury car accidents.Â
